You have to call a timeout to challenge. A challenge isn't treated as a timeout.

The timeout he called when GTJ had the ball, Raptors had numbers with the Celtics defense not set up and Grant Williams on the floor hurt was worse.

You can’t challenge a jump ball call either. Even Devlin was pointing that out, repeatedly. It was a waste of timeout, which could’ve been used to advance the ball in that last play.

        Comedy of errors by Nurse.

            • Nurse has never been good with timeouts. (See: 2019 NBA Finals game 5.)

Yes one of the three of his major flaws as a coach

                1. Overhelping defensive schemes, collapsing in the middle and scrambling to cover the open three point shooters (mostly in the corners).
Scrubs of opposing teams would circle their calendars playing the Raptors because most the time they will have a career night planting themselves in the corners for those wide open three point shots. (Stan VanGundy had a video before explaining this NN flaw)

                2. UN-Successful ATO plays. He has some good ones but most of the time were duds.

                3. Starting seasons by playing his starters to the ground with heavy minutes, little trust to his bench and ending the season with worn down and oft-injured players. The over reliance of VanVleet had some major trickle down effect (team chemistry and development of young players).

but but but….I would still not give up on him.

there is still a low hanging fruit that his boss can address for the immediate future before reaching out and decides if this one on top is replaceable.

                • To add to no.3

we seem to be wasting the development of Koloko and Dowtin

Champaigne was a decent player who always had a nose to loose balls.

NN has some trust issues and he really has to work on that as a coach

this ain’t the team with reliable vets like Gasol/ Serge/ Kyle/ Danny

he has to start seasons trusting his younger players RIGHT OFF THE BAT….you can’t have VanVleet/ Pascal and OG already leading the league in MPG only 7 games in the season.
I pressed the panic button alright back then.

there was one game I recall when the lead was totally unreachable and yet he was still playing starters like it’s game 7. Probably more games like that

I think our entire focus is on the trade deadline and maximizing the value of guys we may be trading. That isn't Dowtin and Koloko so they get to ride the bench for now. Post trade deadline I'll be very disappointed if we don't get heavy doses of Koloko, Banton, Dowtin, etc...

Tell Nurse, no pressure to win, experiment and develop these guys so they are ready to contribute more next season.

                    This is my hope anyways.

I agree if this is the goal right now before the deadline

The coach is always the fall guy in sports (see Canucks)

I would like to believe though that Nick, despite his flaws, has his hands tied behind his back.
The 6'9" vision is Masai's creation and the team is just beginning to implement it as they are still gathering the right pieces.
This situation and Nick's winning history will not get him fired.
I always maintained that this 6'9" project is unsustainable but they will most likely see it through until it the end.

We all know that some major pieces doesn't fit that vision,
perhaps the plan was to deal them all along?

Maybe we should be giving Nurse kudos for how well the team played last year utilizing an entirely novel roster with no PG or true C.

I'm not entirely against project 6'9 but it still requires a real PG (we can find a tall one) and a real C (that can be Koloko and Precious hopefully).

I'm at least a firm believer that OG, Scottie, and Pascal manning the 2-4 positions is incredibly difficult for opposing teams to deal with on both ends.

We need a bench and a real PG. Hopefully we can shore that up via trades and the draft.

The Pool Report interview was conducted by Eric Koreen (The Athletic) with Crew Chief Ed Malloy following tonight’s Boston Celtics at Toronto Raptors game.

QUESTION: “Before the [Pascal] Siakam – [Al] Horford jump ball, did Nick Nurse ask any member of the officiating party if he could challenge the play if he called timeout?”

MALLOY: “No member of our crew heard Coach Nurse ask if he could challenge prior to him calling a timeout. After Coach Nurse called the timeout, that is when he asked if he could challenge the play and I informed him that it was not a challengeable play.”

                            • Well one of them is lying........they can't both be right. Certainly nurse's shocked reaction lends to the idea the ref said he could.

But that said, your an nba coach, your paid in the millions, should you not know the challenge rules like the back of your hand anyhow? Its your job. The rules are pretty clear on what can be challenged. Jr. Ref makes 200k, you make 40 times that and lead an nba team.

"c. A team may utilize a Challenge to trigger instant replay review of only the following three events: (1) a called personal foul charged to its own team, (2) a called out-of-bounds violation, or (3) a called goaltending or basket interference violation; provided that, in the last two minutes of the fourth period and last two minutes of any overtime, a team is no longer able to utilize a Challenge to trigger instant replay review of a called out-of-bounds violation, or called goaltending or basket interference violation, as review of these events during these periods will be exclusively triggered by the on-court game officials."

I don't see jump ball on that list and nick should have known that.

I've got no issues blaming Nurse for this. He should have known the challenge rules already.
