Because 'that's how it's done' is a bad reason to run a play. If you aren't going to run off-ball screens for the guys who are good at them, just don't run them. Use those possessions for high efficiency Lowry/DeMar drives, or Jonas post touches.
Didn't say "because that's how it's done", but anyway, that group of stats doesn't come close to painting the whole picture of what happens off those plays. For example, how many open 3s for others, or even assists, are generated from the same or similar plays? How does it help set up the next play where they do something similar but a little different? In the grand scheme of things, you're looking at a pretty small window.

That said, there's certainly work to be done on the offense before the playoffs roll around, but offense (ranked high in the league) isn't the problem right now compared to lack of focus/consistency on defense. It was said from the start that team identity this season was going to be defense, and that it was going to take a while to work up the offense. JV's absence for half the season hasn't helped, nor Carroll's absence.

Now here's a wild theory, that just may have some meat on it, considering the offense is already ranked high in the league, and the team isn't doing too bad at all in the standings, considering rough early schedule, and key player absences: We all say the regular season means nothing unless they do well in the playoffs, right? Maybe the coaching staff has a bunch of offense in their back pockets, not wanting to show all their cards until the playoffs. I know, I know, a wild ass theory, but word all season has been a slow build on the offense, and they're really not positioned bad with what they're doing so far.

Normally I'd say that it is incredibly unlikely that a coach wouldn't want to run those sets in the regular season to ensure that they work well before relying on it.

But then Casey did use never before seen lineups in the post season so why not offensive sets too.

        • Jesus, DeMar was exposed defensively tonight. JR Smith sat in the corner and waited for DeMar to sag off, then sank open 3 after open 3. DeMar can't guard anyone on the Cavs if he's giving up open 3s to JR. He can't guard LeBron, can't guard Irving.

Isn't JR Smith famous for jacking up too many threes? But sure, he shot - what - 80% tonight. Fuck. I don't know what to tell you there. But I wouldn't hang DD's reputation on tonight alone. On any single night.

And it's just not DeMar's job to guard Kyrie Irving ... or LBJ. Jesus.

JR is famous for jacking contested threes because he doesn't work that hard to get open. DeMar lost him anyway.

But if you'd like to clarify, feel free.

The more traditional method is to simply not respond at all.

                          • I'd say the more traditional method is to try to find some polite way to excuse yourself. I tried.

But "live and learn", I guess. (wink).

                            • Key Stats Update:

                              112 oRTG
                              .162 WS/48 (4.4 WS)
                              54.9 TS%

Also thanks to that outburst from 3 against the Bulls, his percentages are back to normal. 38.7% from the corners, 29.5% overall. Hoping for 40% & 31% on the season, we'll see though.

Also his long 2 attempts continue to decrease now. He's actually taking almost the same percentage of shots at the rim (22.2% of his attempts) as he is from long 2 (22.7%) which is great. That's the number one difference between this year and his last all-star season. While he was very good in 2013-14, he was taking more than twice as many long twos (36.2% of his shots) as shots at the rim (15.3%). That's what's responsible for the spike in efficiency from slightly below average to a fair bit above average.... and on his kind of volume that's absolutely great.

Now if only we could win some games too....

The left corner is where he's good. It's insane the disparity between DeMar's left corner/right corner 3 pointers.
