  • The thing is all the centers coming into the league can all play on the perimeter and shoot from out there. I've said this before for 7' footers to survive in this league now their going to have to be able to guard the perimeter.

None of them are like Reddick. They are essentially standing on the three waiting for the defense to miss them in the corner. Very few offer anything else like Bonner or Novak. The guys like Bosh, Ibaka or LMA are rare

no, you need to change the defense (based on your assumption that all these players are standing out at the 3pt line on offense.

You swap you pf on them out there, keep your bigman inside to clean up when these "3pt guys coming in" shoot their 30% from three.

Its the same type of defense that people used on Bargnani that eventually pushed him into a pf role..or Dirk...or Davis...etc...these 3pt shooter start out there, then they become floor spacing pfs instead.

I don't have to stop it, you cannot tell someone to stop posting a debate of an idea that you are continuously trolling.

It is a FACT that traditional style centers cannot guard out on the three point line. period.

Show me examples of how top defensive type centers like Hibbert (in his top defensive years) was getting out to defend on the three point line, even if his guy is a "sniper"

And further more, show me how top defensive guys like tony allen can still allow "snipers" like Korver to get shots off from the 3pt line.

you response in my opinion was completely over the top and uncalledfor as it was a simple counterpoint to the post you made.....and instead of attempting to counter my point with evidence of your own you hurl out requests for me to stop, and then just proceed to caps lock your post and then insult at the end.

In my opinion your response totally discredits your original thoughts( even though it was nothing more than a troll post)
Man. You really go out of your way to defend Jv as a god who makes no mistakes.

im not defending him to be a god.

I am not criticizing him for not being good at defending the three point line by stating that guys like Dwight, Hibbert, Chander and Deandre play poor defense out at the three pt line.

That is why bigmen who can consistantly step out there and make that shot are such a hot commoddity. Its because it it very hard for and equally large man to defend that shot.

I have stated that JV need to improve alot of areas, my criticism are just...this is not....

Every fucking national team in Europe have 7footer who makes three pointers. I'm not kidding, just watch few games. It's crazy.

Anthony Davis, Prongis, Skal labissiere, Dragan Bender, Henry Ellerson and Diamon Stone. To name a few that are in and will be in the league in a few years.

I don't think this is necessarily true. "Guarding the perimeter", and being "mobile" are two different things. I think your Centers need to be able to move around to a degree, but expecting a guy of JV size to go out as far as the 3 point line, and then expect him to recover in time is just bad strategy.

Casey was known for his crazy Zone-hybrid in Dallas, in part to avoid exactly this with Chandler; and we've seen it exactly zero times here in Toronto. Masai has already indicated that the defensive style will be changing to better suit JV, which is exactly what should have been done long ago. It really makes no sense to me having a big scary body like JV being allowed to be that far away from the hoop.

Didn't watch that game but team don't need 5 perimeter defender to defend 5 shooters. 4 guys should be able to rotate to cover 5 spots adequately. Teams should be able to hold a lead with a high fg% high ft% big against teams going for broke shooting threes with 5 shooters. It's a question of time and %
I think you just roughly described scramble defense. Here's a hint, it sucks unless you have 4 realy good and quick defenders

Thanks for this. Context is so damn important. JV getting benched because the other team put in 5 3-point shooters makes sense and shouldn't be an indictment on JV's defense.
Another thing to put this benching in to context. Jv wasn't benched for a smaller more mobile wing/pf. He was replaced by the equally slow 6'11 270 lb centre Javtokas...

And I don't know what's new here. Jv's defense was and still is pretty weak. Bit his offence is strong

All I'm saying all bigs are being coach to play on the perimeter and in the paint. It use to be just the international players but, it come over to the U.S.

THis has been going on for more than a little while, but it has yet to translate, because, like pointed out earlier, an offense still needs an inside presence. It is a ticking timebomb of an offense to have 5 guys standing on the perimeter. So 1 guy always needs to go inside, and because of that, you put a guy like JV defending the inside and keep four mobile defenders outside.

Scramble defense puts two defenders on the ball then tries to cover the open shooter usually the wing shooters. 5 shooters means two in the corner leaving the weak side unguarded means teams need to make long skip passes to reach the unguarded corner. Really decent teams can also leave the strong side unguarded then follow the ball to defend the corner hard. Spacing with 5 shooters isn't great

Javtokas is a defensive specialist. Gritty old guy, like their Chuck Hayes.

Advanced stats and my eye test tells me that JV is an average NBA defender, so I'm going to take twitter reactions to international play with a giant fucking grain of salt. JV is getting warmed up to destroy the NBA, it's good he's working the kinks out before the season starts.

If FIBA play translated directly to the NBA then we just signed the best PF in basketball. Scola is averaging 23.5 pts, 11.3 reb, 2.5 ast, while shooting 53% from the floor.

Wiggins has made a lot of mistakes at FIBA too, I wonder if Minnesota fans have a forum thread shitting all over him?

EDIT: Damn, I just realized JV has only played ONE game so far at Eurobasket, everyone surely needs to calm the fuck down. ONE game guys, singular, 28 minutes total......
