  • Matt Moore with some JV props.

If we knew half as much about coaching an NBA team as we think, we"d know twice as much as we do.

    • JV has turned himself into a modern center this season. I think there are still some matchups that will really hurt him, but with the added three point range to spread the floor on offense and his improved awareness on the defensive end, he fits into a modern gameplan quite nicely on both ends. The good thing is when necessary we can go to Poeltl or Ibaka at the 5 if the matchup doesn't suit him, but that's been less and less necessary as the year as gone along.

      • Actually, I highly recommend anyone with a few minutes to click on the "See Hardwood Paroxysm's other Tweets" link and scoll down to the tweets around the one I posted. A few really good points there on the Raptors scheme and execution last night.

And as the tweet noted, the coaching staff trusted JV to be able to execute or they never would have attempted that PnR scheme.

          • would it be safe to say jv is having a way better season but some of his stats suffer slightly because serge is a viable option

serge has hardly played the 5 this season because JV and Jakob are so good.

yes but when serge is on the floor with JV he is a viable option in the offence compared to let's say pascal was last year when starting.

JV has a higher usage when on the floor than last year, or any previous year. His non-star usage is a) because of our high usage guards, not our PF and b) appropriate within the current team structure. We use him more when it makes sense, and he's capable of it, which will help in some playoff matchups.

                  • Also, the only reason any of his stats might appear to be suffering is his low minutes played (which is simply a function of depth and an outsized number of blowouts). He's averaging career highs in points, rebounds, assists, steals and of course 3FG per 36 minutes, at about his career average in FG% (despite aforementioned three point shooting) and blocks.

JV only works now because our guards are fighting through screens, even doing the Curry spin move around the screener to stay in contact with the ball carrier. That’s a largely under-reported, but critical change in the defensive schemes this year that has paid off huge. We don’t rely on help or scrambling as much, because our guards are containing the ball better 1-on-1, or at least creating enough resistance to give JV a split second more time to react.

Yep. The single biggest determining point for whether the Raps will have a good or bad defensive night is how quickly the guards are getting back in front of their man after a pick. OG is great at this, as is Wright (which is why missing both was one reason why I thought we'd struggle against HOU - thankfully Norm returned to form in that area and Lowry and DD both had high effort games).

his(JV) all around game just looks so much more polished. In some regards both kyle and demar have the same issue in the traditional stats that they excelled in last year but are playing to a high standard without wearing them selves out thus letting the bench develop.

                          • It's not just the guards fighting through screens. The extra help has also been more consistent on the roll man. The amount of times no one would bump the roller was criminal in previous years. Now when JV is forced to commit to the ballhandler, his man isn't getting as many free passes to the rim on the roll.
