  • A lot of it was also the terrible guard play for Lithuania - if the guard doesn't brush his man on the screen, there's not much the big can do.

Man if only JV got better at dishing out to open teammates from the post. Together with defense that's one of the top priorities for him in my view.
Yeah that would be sweet. Imagine JV gets ball in low post defence collapses on him and he passes to a cutter or open man for wide open 3 ...

Just to be clear: if he were doing this and were mobile enough to smother the three point line and already defended the p'n'r perfectly, he'd be ahead of Anthony Davis in terms of next generation of superstars. He'd probably have gotten MVP votes last year, too.

He's not a perfect player, he's still young, you're going to pick out plays where he blew his coverage and missed a rotation. That's pretty normal for a young basketball player, especially a big.

What's most important now is his trajectory - is he developing in a positive direction? I do hope to see his defensive awareness, rotations, and p'n'r coverage improve this season. At the same time, the entire Raptors squad needs to improve in those area this season. They'll go a long way to making each other look better if they take a step forward on D. Jonas is not a DPOY-candidate big who will cover up a lot of his teammates' mistakes. They need to improve as an entire team.

Yeah, I noticed that he was simply shooting over a few smaller guys, which isn't gonna happen in the NBA. But still, the bank shot, posting from the right side and using the left hand are a few things we didn't too much before from JV. Not flashy, but simple and effective. Here's hoping he's learned a few things from the Jack Sikma coaching sessions and the off-season in general.

Which he will likely see in small ball lineups this coming season...

                  It is overall maturation.

The game slows as you get older.

                  I.e. a player's processing gets faster.

JV just turned 23 - he is going to be fine.

He likely would have been farther ahead with more minutes....but maybe his extension wouldn't be what it is if that had happened.

Pretty underwhelming compared to JV....Yet JV still getting flack for putting up 20 and 10 over 3 games against 3/4's, in games that don't translate to the NBA style.. etc.

But JV is below average in defending the three point line compared to other centers.

We're like the parents who yell at their kid for getting a 98 on the test. Look dad, I got an A. 98? Why didn't you score 100?

                        • Just wanted to do a comparison between our own JV at the end of Season 3 in comparison to some Centers at the same point in their careers

                          JV - 22 yo
                          Al Jefferson - 22 yo
                          Deandre Jordan - 22 yo
                          Chandler - 21yo
                          Marc Gasol - 26 yo
                          Dwight - 21 yo

                          Here is where JV ranked

                          FG% - 2nd - tied with Howard at .554
FGa - 4th at 7.6(2.3 shots less than Howard)

(based on a per 36 minutes and/or per 100 possessions)
                          FT% - 1st
                          TRB - 3rd - 0.2 behind Al Jefferson for 2nd
                          Ast - 5th
                          Steals - 6th
                          Blocks - 6th (.2 behind Dwight for 3rd)
Turnover (tied with Gasol for 2nd)
                          Fouls - 3rd
                          Points - 3rd (0.5 ponts behind 2nd, 1.7 behind 1st)

Offensive Rating 1st( tied with Gasol)
Defensive Rating 4th (1 point ahead of Gasol and Deandre)

                          Winshare/48 - 1st by a mile at .155 (Gasol second at .144

                          DBPM - 6th .1 behind Jefferson

                          TS% - 2nd
                          TRB% - 3rd
                          Ass% - 5th

Does Jonas need to improve defense - Sure, the entire team does...we SUCKED last year.

But Jonas is more than holding his own against a 4 years his senior Marc Gasol offensively, and is not far off of some absolute beasts defensively in Dwight, Jordan and Chandler at the same point in their careers.
