If you seed teams that make the playoffs 1 through 8 based on record rather than conference standings it makes no difference if you have a single conference or two 8 team divisions. Since we use the NBA lottery to seed draft that too remains unchanged.
I am 2nd low man on the totem pole here in terms of being in the league so I am neutral on Conference (16 teams listing) or Divisional (2 x 8 team conferences.) But my 15th ranked vote says one long list of 16.


However... as a grizzled one year vet for the fantasy basketball auction draft tell me more about how that works.

From what I have read I gather you use a randomizer to determine the order in which one can nominate a player for auction.
So say the randomizer says I nominate 7th and I pick Player X.
Can I open the bidding at 200$ if thats the guy I want ?
Or does Yahoo start the bidding with a 1$ start price with the nomination and then everyone puts in their bids till the time clock runs out on the player on auction ?

If you only have one free agent to sign, then you can nominate a player for $200 and get the player. If you have 4 roster spots to fill, then the maximum bid on anyone guy will be $197, since you need the other $3 to assign $1 bids on those guys.

That's why teams entering the auction with only one roster spot, can spend all $200 on one guy and beat most other team's max bid (unless they too only have one roster spot to fill as well).

I still think the cleanest way to avoid the fastest hands to $200 scenario is to tie the auction money to a team's cap space. Would also mean if you want to pay a lot for a player, you have to sign them to a big contract (like in real life). Which I love about the idea. Would probably have a significant variation of cap room/FAAB between teams, for example right now jbml has 4 years of cap room and TGO and Coach both have 25 years of cap room.

But that would be a lot of work (maybe?) for the commish. Maybe lock in all years (as we do) but also freeze transactions after Sep 1st, so commish has time to punch in all the cap room numbers as FAAB dollars in Yahoo. This would kill FAAB as a trade piece, so there are downsides (though in real life cash is such a minor trade asset that it's not exactly unrealistic). But would align FAAB/cap room for in-season waiver claims as well (need cap room/FAAB to sign a player, $0 claims automatically would be unresignable as you are over the cap).

The one real downside I could see is autodraft - Yahoo not understanding the system might mean someone who misses the draft ends up with a mediocre vet signed to a 15 year contract. Would need to give that some thought. I guess they could just decide not to sign them, like we do with our current autodraft results, go fishing in the post-auction waters.

Anyway, I love this concept so apologies for bringing it up whenever the FAAB discussions about changes kick off. Personally I think we should be moving the FAAB system to be more aligned with our cap system instead of more arbitrary. Right now good cap management gives players an edge (even if that edge comes down to quick fingers sometimes) at the auction. FAAB budgets/carryover above $200 would mean cap management is essentially not a factor at the auction - FAAB management is instead.

This all feels way more complicated than just allowing up to $100 max to carry over... no?

There is a yahoo system delimiter of 1$ for every roster spot that remains open on the yahoo system calculated team list.
So your maximum bid is the number of roster spots at a buck a spot that remain on the player you are bidding on.
Well thats hard wired and its tough to change that.

So you can set an opening bid value for any amount you choose as long as its below that system governed max amount in your FAAB budget.
I have 6 spots to fill so my max bid on any one player is $195

I think its impossible to tie FAAB to contracts and have it manageable without switching service providers. Doing something like that now also poses challenges in determining contract values for players already on teams. The easiest way to move away from quick draw is to do away with random nominations order for preset nominations order. We'd need to figure out how to award the order though and that's no easy thing. The purpose of going this way is to keep it simple but effective, because anyone on the clock can nominate a player in the amount equal to the FAAB they have left, which is a max bid.

The contract values for players already on teams would stay the same in my proposal. FAAB would be the same as cap room, which is the same as contract length. We'd just all have a lot less FAAB.

I do think a random nomination order limited to the $200 players would do it, yeah? I suppose we could do a random number generator offline to determine the order and manually set the nomination order in Yahoo. And then set the order in descending order of FAAB available. Seems like a clean, simple solution.

Yeah, my proposal is not a small change, or simple on the face of it. I do think it would ultimately be simpler to understand as a cap system vs the two different systems (cap room/years for roster construction and FAAB for auction and waivers) we currently implement - especially as we further complicate those systems by adding things like FAAB trades, carry over, etc. We'll almost certainly never implement it, I just like it too much not to bring it up in an annoying fashion whenever I get the chance.

My complaint about the carry over is definitely not about complication. It's certainly simple. I just don't see the benefit of it. We're just going to shift to multiple teams making FAAB trades to make sure they have the $100 carry over, and a few $300 teams hitting the auction every year and hoping to be the fastest to click, just like now.

There had in the past been some intent to make the rules more like the real thing, as much as is practical. I'm not sure the FAAB carry over idea is aligned with that sentiment - but I also don't know how important that sentiment is.

One solution and it would be madness would be to not have a draft, and let the computer pick all our players for us. Then we use the waiver wire to try and get the guy you want, if they are still there.

Or spices up the trade market in case someone took a guy you really wanted but couldn't get.

Of course that takes the fun out of the draft. But if someone can't make it for whatever reason they are in an even playing field with everyone else.

Just spit balling.. but what if we just did nomination/ draft order based on how many years of cap we have?
Teams with the most year of cap space go first and so on.

Creates a situation where you can plan to "open up cap space" so you can be the first crack at getting your target?

Teams with multiple open spots will likely get to nominate forst and therefore won't have the $200 to spend all on 1 player.
