Meh, don't really want an addition up front. The 4th line will be reduced in impact and minutes come the playoffs, and with any luck Johnsson will move up the roster and provide a little of that edge (and skill) to one of the top three lines.

If anything, try to find a landing place for Zaitsev and someone functional to take his spot on the right side, just a third pair RD of NHL quality would do. That guy can be a bruiser if you want, but I like the speed and talent up front, and there's a few guys (Hyman, Kadri, Johnsson) who are pesky enough to deal with a physical game.
You don't have to be a bruiser to play tough ... What you have to do is push back.. Which is not on the current CV of the leafs 12 forwards save for Khadri and Hyman.. neither of which is a physical presence.

Zaitsev has not played as well as he did the year he was on his entry level deal. He skates well but he doesn't have the strength to handle bigger players in front of the net. He will have to lean on sticks better than he does if he cant move guys with his body. His successors are on the Marlies now in Sandin and Liligroen.. Those guys are pretty young so he has a year or two left before he gets squeezed out if he doesn't up his game some...

I like Andreas Johnnson.. speed to burn and he has NHL hands... but he too does not bring the physical aspect of the game that so many others also don't have....

Kevin Hayes in NY or Micheal Ferland in Carolina bring a more physical presence game in and game out.. but the price is going to be high... I think one or possibly two of Brown / Johansson / Bracco or Moore.. possibly Khadri who has a great deal can be moved as the Leafs are uber deep up front.

Or.. they do nothing and rise to the challenge....

    • Yeah, my point is neither Ferland nor Hayes is worth the price they will demand, so I'd rather they look to improve the back end (and the books next year) by upgrading the Zaitsev spot. Should cost less than acquiring one of those power forwards and IMO those power forwards will not help the team win.

        Well the trade deadline approaches...
Lets see if the Leafs add something or go with what they have.

        EDIT...

After the Andreas Johnsoon cheap shot knee on knee injury .....which would have elicited a response from any team from bantam A to the NHL went unanswered by the Leafs.... the need for a physical presence grows exponentially ...the outcome of this non response is that this team can be pushed around... and it will be come in spades in April....

Not one of those 19 guys who dressed stood up for their team mate who doesn't engage in that kind of thing...He is just 175lbs

        Not a single one...
In Tampa.. Stammer.. who is a bona fide all star ....steps up when one of the triplets gets cheap shotted... In Toronto... NOTHING.. no one...

Its not as if Johnsson is a pariah among his team mates or anything..

This chickenshit response lands squarely on the players....

        • the leafs are going to regret not paying the price carolina asked for one michael ferland....

the window is still pretty wide open for them.. but the boy wonder Dubas didn't address the problem they have with the physical nature of the playoffs for a run this year....

          • The players themselves should seriously beahsmed of themselves. Not a team, certainly not Cup material.

How the fuck do you not go out and spill your guts for Tavares in that game, HOW?

I'm seriously not liking them right now, like, I am not bing a fan of theirs.

            • LOL, you guys. No, Ferland wouldn't make the difference for this team. They are built to win with skill and they'll win or lose with skill. And no, having a bad game against the Islanders doesn't mean the team is "not a team."

Dan, go look at your numbers and stats, leave the actual real sports stuff to the experts

                :P

When a team consistently folds like a cheap tent in the wind, every tme a hard games comes to them, everytime a team turn up the effort etc, then yes, its a problem.

They should have killed the Islanders the first time they met, they laid an egg instead and got thoroughly outworked. These guys ALL have social media, they ALL know what has been happening, whats being said, Tavares is on their team, they owe him to step up. The second game comes along, in Long ISland, and these guys KNOW what he has to face, and they come out and play the Preseason mens league game??????? What the actual fuck is that?

Nah man, they are oft soft soft. YOu can be fast and skilled and still play with a sense of urgency and a competitive nature. Matthews, Nylander, Marner, and a few more...these guys look at time like they don't even care to be there...until the puck is on their stick and effort will benefit them.

I think this team was built poorly, either that, or Babcock has got to go because he doesn'thhave the Leafs playing inspired Hockey. Skill team or not, there is no excuse for not trying, and in the scenario were discussing now, its disgusting that they didn't come out with some fire for Tavares.

No... your wrong here... with a bit of a security blanket when things are going to get tough.. and they are going to get really tough.. a guy like Ferland or Simmons adds about 2 inches and 15 pounds to every player....

They are skilled.. but they need the physical aspect of the game as well.. not dummy tough.. but they need some sandpaper they don't have or exhibit at the moment.

They don't have ANY sandpaper or grit? Is Jake Muzzin fun to get hit by? Is Naz, or Johnsson, or Kappy, or Hyman fun to play against?

What you mean is they don't have enough, and have determined that adding one such player would make all the difference, which IMO is silly.

Every time a team loses a game, fans love to say that means something grand about their chances, and fans are basically always wrong. You don't think we can find some evidence that the team has in fact turned up for those big games just as often as they disappear? You just don't care to observe those instances. Which is fine, live in your world and have fun with it. Can't help myself chuckling at it though.

Nope.. they don't right now... and we are going to disagree on this forever. ...

Kahdri's role is to be the Leafs rat .. to stir shit up... hes good at it and stirs stuff up... but its not his job to finish it...he scores to boot... 30 plus last year and he is the same guy this year...but he is not muscle that opens up ice...

Hyman plays the same game he did in the GTHL.. he is a the F1 forechecker who gets to the puck and busts his ass to get it out to a finisher.. ... but he doesn't inspire any fear .. its not what he does..

Muzzin has handed out exactly three checks since he got here... he needs a guy like ferland or simmons who will show up if he gets into trouble... and right now the leafs have no one who is going to show up when they need to.... Johnsoon got cheaped shotted and as i posted earlier not a single guy stood up...

Sami's kid is a tough kid like the old man was... he has speed to burn and has no fear.. he can score..... but he is not going to start wall papering defenseman in the playoffs and dropping the gloves when its needed..... its not his game nor should it be... thats a player like ferland or tzachuck or tom wilson or evander kanes or byfugliens game....no one wants to go with those guys.... no one.

Just one of those guys and Muzzin plays tougher... hell even Autson Mathews might play like he is 6'3" and 220 lbs instead of playing small like he has so far... Khadris rat act will draw more even more penalites and the Leafs have a pretty damn good PP.....

It takes a bunch of things to win the Cup.. one them is a hard ass forward or defenseman... The Leafs.. have tons and tons of skill.. but its not enough....

Your wrong here Danny... they need an Ogie Oglethorp type..they made a mistake in letting Matt Martin go...

you can be smug if you like, but all you need to do is go back and look at the schedule and try hard to remember what the situation leading up to certain games was. The scales are tilted heavy to the "no-show" side.

You don't think so, thats cool. You;'re wrong though

                            I like this post.

However a nuance I don't reall ylike is the need for a scrapper. You don't need a scrapper. You need 5-6 guys on a team that play straight up, no holds barred "gay porn hard" to coin a phrase. Basically that just means guys that play fucking hard, and can swing momentum.

They don't have to light guys up at center ice.
                            They don't have to fight.

Hell, Toronnto has played games where they played like that for small stretches and they looked like world beaters. So maybe they think they can just flick a switch in April...sadly, that won't work, it has to be a culture, and mindset thats ingrained. You don't have to kill anyone, you just have to be really, really hard to play against. You have to knock a guy on his ass if he bumps your goalie, a goalie thats had concussions, but who, gets run regularly, ans hacked at, because teams know no wthat they can just do it. Have some god damned pride. Some of Toronto's players love dressing nice for their game entrance, and they like saying its' tradtion.....thats cool....know whats also tradition in Hockey, taking the body.....better yet, get hit once in a while to make a play.

Can you rmemeber the last 3 times Nylander has been decked? Matthews? nope.

These guys play soft. Maybe they are saving it, but I doubt it.

They don't need a fake tough guy gasbag chirp away he is going to kill you as he skates backwards to the bench....They don't need a dummy tough guy who goes with the first person he sees when he is on the ice....

They need a guy no one wants to fuck with... Pittsburgh has Letang who is borderline crazy.... San Jose has Kane who kicked some guys ass three times in one game and he was challenged each time to do it.... Winnipeg has Byfuglien and Boston has Chara.. two guys you just don't want to have to deal with if someone runs your goalie.....

Ferland doesnt hunt fights.. neither does Simmons.. but if it comes to it... they somehow get to the middle of it in a hurry...

Leafs don't have that guy.... they did with Martin... but BabPenis (which sounds better than Babcock) didn't think he needed him...but when the Leafs line up against the Bruins who play physical... that decision last July with no backfill for that role might well cost them this series...
