  • Trading for a Center and another 2012 pick

Note: This post assumes that there will be a season played out next year.

When discussing Tyson Chandler as a potential free agent pick up, I had this idea of trying to obtain a center through trades instead of through free agency with the goal of picking up another 2012 pick in the process.

The whole idea is that there would be more options via trade, and getting another 2012 pick (preferably a lottery) would be the real gem in the process, especially since we have a center that we are waiting on for the following year.

Our trading assets are basically Bargnani, Barbosa and Calderon (although in order to trade Jose, the Raps would have to also get back a PG, which makes him an unlikely trade partner).

Here are the teams that I would consider lottery bound for 2012:

    Sacramento
    Minnesota
    Charlotte
    Cleveland
    Washington
    Houston
    New Jersey
    Utah
    Detroit
    Phoenix
    Golden State
    Milwaukee
    Indiana
    LA Clippers

What trades can you come up with that will yield a center and an unprotected 2012 pick? The center is basically temporary until JV comes on board, so the center doesn't have to be a stud. The 2012 pick is the real target here. With that in mind the players involved in the trade should heavily favour the other team. This is why I can only really come up with trades that include Bargnani.

I originally had Hickson and the Cav's 2012 pick for Bargs, but Cleveland already traded him for Casspi.

Here are some others that I have:

    Sacramento and Toronto:
    Thompson + Pick for Bargnani
    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=46uwnsl
Rational: Sacramento needs scoring. We can get a young center with potential and of course the pick which I sense would be top 3.

    Minnesota and Toronto:
Milicic, Ellington + Pick for Bargnani
    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=3hrulfw
Rational: Can pair Love with Bargnani. Won't really work, but may be able to convince Khan that it would We get a true center and of course that pick (which should be high next year as well).

    Charlotte and Toronto:
Biyombo, Diop, Cunningham + Pick for Bargnani and TPE
    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=3zfwfyt
Rational: Charlotte desperately needs scoring, and cap space. We get the pick from last year that we wanted plus fillers. Cunningham is so the trade works with the Trade Machine. But once Biyombo signs with Charlotte his salary would be enough to make this work without Cunningham. Could even swap Biyombo for Kemba.

I like your thinking and hate to be a buzz kill here as it is a good idea for a thread but:

Sacramento has their 2012 pick protected to Cleveland.

Minnesota has their 2012 pick unprotected to LAC.

Charlotte has their 2012 pick protected to Chicago.

    http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/dra...rafts/detailed

However, if any of those picks aren't sent next year they could be traded on draft day except the Thompson deal becaues he'd be a RFA (if that still applies of course).

Some other ideas might be deals swapping picks.

      Cleveland:
Casspi/Varejao/right to swap 1st rounder for Bargnani

Personally, I'd be looking to send Bargnani to the western conference in any trade. The guy has shown he be a good player when he is motivated and/or tries.

Thanks Matt. I didn't take into consideration picks that were owed to other teams. If the Raptors want a 2012 pick before the next draft, then that takes a lot of teams out of the equation.

Here is a revised list of teams that could potentially be in the lottery in 2012 and still have their own pick in tact:

        Cleveland
        Washington
        New Jersey
        Detroit
        Phoenix
        Milwaukee
        Indiana
        Denver

I'll try and come up with some trades involving these teams some time.

Its a good idea, however BOTH teams need to like the trade, not just us...
And generally teams dont like to trade their franchise player away for pennies...

yeah but chris paul is leaving which ties there hands, i guess it depends on the offers that new orleans gets. we'll see what they end up getting for him.

It might be the best thing they could get? not sure. I think even houstan could pull off a better deal than that.

Spent a few minutes coming up with some trades, such that the Raps get a Center and a 2012 pick. Had to go with a team that actually has their 2012 pick available to be traded.

Here is what I came up with:

                    Raptors & Nuggets:
Bargnani and TPE for Mozgov, TPE and Pick (unprotected)
                    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=3nqgnmw
Rational: Mozgov is a young up and coming center. Can be good for a year while we wait for JV. Denver gets Bargnani to play with Gallinari which will be good for both of them and exciting for the team. We get their pick. I don't see Denver in the playoffs next year which means lottery potential.

                    Raptors & Suns:
Bargnani, Barbosa and TPE for Pietrus, Frye, Warrick, Lawal and Pick (protected)
                    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=3dukvsk
Rational: Pietrus can be our 3pt shooter which we need. Frye is really a less talented Bargnani. Warrick can be a beast. Nash gets another scorer/3pt thread, and gets to play with one of his best friends again. We get their lottery protected pick. Which can work out since the Suns may squeak into the playoffs with Nash still on board.

                    Raptors & Pistons
Bargnani, Barbosa for Wallace, Gordon and Pick (2nd round)
                    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=3jmrmrp
Rational: Wallace may not want to leave the Pistons, but he'd get major playing time with us, and get to teach the young pups a thing or two about defense. We would also have to take on Gordon's salary but he'd be an adequate replacement for Barbosa. Pistons would get more offense and a younger guy with Bargnani. The 2nd rounder could still be a very good pick.

                    Raptors & Wizards
Bargnani, Barbosa, Amir, Alabi and TPE for Lewis, McGee and Pick (unprotected)
                    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=4yp6dma
Rational: I don't like to see Amir going but without a backup guard for Bayless we really need Calderon. We get Lewis' huge contract but would get a top 5 pick in the lottery next year. McGee is not the best but is young and adequate until JV comes on board.

                    Raptors & Cavs:
Bargnani for Hollins, TPE and Pick (unprotected)
                    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=6g6yawa
Rational: Hollins is end of the bench guy at best, but a top pick from the Cavs would be the only reason I do this. Can't really get Varajeo because he's better than Bargnani. The point of this is to acquire another 2012 pick.

                      Wanted to add one more:

                      Raptors, Pacers & Jazz:
Bargnani to Utah for Okur + 2013 Pick (unprotected), Barbosa + TPE to Indiana for Posey and 2012 Pick (protected), and Indiana trades Granger to Utah for Jefferson
                      http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=3h2oyq8

Rational: I wanted to get a pick from either Indiana or Utah (why not both). We lose bad on both ends by losing Bargnani and Barbosa, and gain two old vets in Okur and Posey. But we get their picks (2013 for Utah since 2012 is owed to Minny). Indiana and Utah swap their studs. Utah needs a SF if Kirilenko unsigns, and they have too many bigs. Indiana has George who can fill in for Granger and get a stud PF that they need.

The way I see it, look for contender teams with extra picks:
                          http://www.nbadraft.net/nba_draft_trades/2012

From this list, Bulls/Celtics/Nuggests are contenders. Denver really has only future 1st round options. Celtics pick is less valuable than that of the Bulls. So I say go for the Bulls extra pick.

Bulls would love to have the firepower of Bargnani in complement to the defense of Noah.

                          Trade Suggestion:
Toronto TRADES - Bargnani + cash considerations
Toronto RECEIVES - Omer Asik + Ronnie Brewer + 1st round pick (bobcats via bulls)

Bulls get a very good chance for a Championship. Raptors get a young center in Asik who can give quality 'rasho like' minutes, Brewer (since Weems is heading to Europe), and the 2012 pick we covet.

Certainly interesting thinking. Getting the pick is nice, and while Brewer's D would be great (and I see the argument for that big time) his 3pt shooting is atrocious. This would definitely be about the pick. Since Chicago is likely targeting a SG in FA then they will want to free up room at the 2-guard, it may be Korver instead depending upon who they like less going into the season and what the FA focus looks to bring. The Charlotte pick would expect to be a good one, except that it is lottery and other protected for a few years, it is an asset.

Asik and Brewer are two solid pieces who play the game the way management have talked about. Problem with this deal is it leaves the Bulls with Noah, Boozer, Dre and Gibson which would be arguably the best front court in basketball but no question the most expensive (Only the Lakers would be close). I'd find it tough for the Bulls to part ways with Asik given how little he's paid and you'd have a better chance of a deal worked around Boozer if you didn't want to get hung up on.
