They still exist! There's a few around Toronto at least. VW does free passes to Drive-Ins for customers that sign up every Summer.
There's one at the border of Oakville and Mississauga too, just north of the QEW

That's the one I went to! It's way more legit than I thought it would be! I expected an old falling apart screen just set in a field. Lol

      • Watched the 4K remastered edition of The Shining for the Doctor Sleep event in theatres. Best horror film of all time and one of my all-time favourite films in general. The 4K was nice but it's such a beautiful film I'm not really sure I noticed it much past the opening helicopter shots (which are always incredible and unsettling and scary for reasons I can not explain). Jack Nicholson is so so great in this film. He's hilarious and scary and everything in between; probably one of his best performances.

Also, the new poster has grown on me. I'm pretty sure Kubrick himself wouldn't have liked it but it has a nice aesthetic.

The Doctor Sleep portion after the film was a waste though. Nothing of substance, only a cheap featurette made documentary style about the film with interviews of director Mike Flanagan and Stephen King. I'm very nervous for Doctor Sleep, I really think Stephen King doesn't understand his own story in the Shining. He's got it all confused with this world of people who "Shine" when really the story is about the Overlook hotel itself. I'm hoping for the best but if King has input which he apparently has I'm skeptical at best.

        • The review the Irishman are getting are just incredible. People are calling it better than expected, and thats from some regular folk too not just pretentious media

Scorcese, Pacino, Deniro, Pesci...Scorcese and Pacino have never done a movie together. Pesci came out of retirement for this, hasn't done a movie in 10 years.

I'm beyond amped. It's in verrry limited screens Nov 1, Netflix Nov 27...here's hoping I can find a showing in Calgary before the Netflix release
It's Klaw Season. Time to hunt.

Yeah this looks so good. 3.5 hours but you can't go wrong with that cast. Plus it has Landry from Friday Night Lights, Bobby Canavale, and Ray Romano which is an interesting choice (he's actually pretty good in dramas).

I hope we get the crazy eyed Pesci from Good Fellas and Casino. I love that he's back for this.

                  • Saw Joker opening weekend, will be seeing again next weekend. It was very good. Not sure if it's better than Ad Astra yet, The political backfire behind it is absolutely misguided and unjustified. The biggest problems are its likeness to Scorsese films like King of Comedy and Taxi Driver, but I didn't much mind as to me it came off as homage. A few questionable decisions in the third act kept if from being very very good.Todd Philips did a wonderful job directing, and his work with DP Lawrence Sher really paid off as they brought Gotham to life in such an interestingly beautiful yet tragic kind of way. Joaquin Phoenix is obviously brilliant and proves yet again he's one of the best actors working today. Overall though, I would definitely recommend, it's worth supporting movies like these, especially amidst the political backlash from the gatekeeping critics and social media pundits.

I heard Ritchi was really pushing for it but at this point it's likely not happening. What a shame. Audiences don't support original IPs anymore!

Well what's funny about that is "Man from UNCLE" is actually an old 1960's Spy Show, and I totally thought it was going to take off when I saw it, and it just never did. I know Armie Hammer was keen to do another, so you never know!

Oh, I know, and they really pulled off the right vibe while still making it kind of "modern" in terms of filmmaking grammar. Armie Hammer was awesome and he's seriously underrated. Finger's crossed they can get it off the ground but at this point I have my doubts, especially considering how the first one did in the box office.

Absolutely agree. Can't wait for Ezra Millers Flash movie .. think it's finally a go. And Henry Cavill is the only Superman for me. They need to make another Man of Steel.

Now if all blockbusters would be meaningful as this movie then I would say that our society is starting to change for the better. Never glorified Hollywood actors and producers, but if they would be creating art + making their big-budget movies impactful then I would start to really respect them as role models because they're doing it on the big screen and using it for the right cause.
