The pessimist in me says that we could've described Lowry this way last year, too. That he never really found that ideal balance with DeRozan either. And that was after countless years (and a bromance for the ages) together.

There's a lot of hope in Raptorland for when the Raptors finally fire on all cylinders. But what if it never actually happens?
Designing an offense around DeRozan was difficult because he was non-shooting threat from deep. Everybody else had to be floor spacers for DeMar because teams packed the paint when he had the ball. However, Lowry and Kawhi are both great 3-pt shooters, so they can take turns spacing the floor for each other. It can be more of a partnership with Kawhi than with DeMar. The synergy with DeMar was always going to be un-balanced when you have a shooting guard who can't shoot from distance.

On the surface, the main negative similarity with Derozan is that Kawhi may appear to be a ball-stopper, but he played his best basketball in the Spurs 2014 ball movement system, so he knows how to move the ball.

    • Lowry has had some good games with Kawhi playing well too. I mean the first Philly game was evidence of that (pre Butler trade).

Kawhi had 31 points with 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Lowry had 20 points with 12 assists, and 3 rebounds and 1 steal. Lowry was 7/14 and had 3 triples.

So they can play effectively beside each other. Just need more time/practice. Lowry needs to continue to be aggressive, especially in the paint. Take shots that the offense gives to him.

The way Fred is playing like shite, it wouldn't hurt to have Lowry on the sidelines giving him some in-game advice on how to attack the defense, from a PG's POV.

                      • IMO, Kyle is the perfect complement to a player with Kawhi’s skillset and personality.

One is a quiet Alpha and the other one is the more vocal and expressive.

Both with very high BBIQ, relentless defenders and diverse offensively at any area of the court.

Its just a matter of developing chemistry and how both can influence the other starters participation utilizing Nurse’s playbook.

I hope they both can stay healthy and can really do some damage when it matters

Either that, or trade FVV for DJ Augustin.

Funny you said this in relation to your post about FVV.

When DJA was with the Raptors, Casey for some reason gave him a shorter leash just like Fred. He never prospered under Casey. Yet when given a bigger role by other teams, he thrives. Van Vleet however seems going the wrong direction when given a broader responsibility under Nurse but was more effective in a smaller role under DC

Really think this year's struggles of last year's bench players come down to not having Siakam with them anymore. In hindsight, that guy breaks open defences in a way that benefitted all of them. Without that dynamic there, FVV and CJ really struggle, forcing the play against set defenders who they don't skills to break down.

Would really like to see those two in particular just find open shots instead of forcing things. Both seem like they're trying to step up in leadership and it's not working.

That said, Nurse is a coach who's going to be fine with players pushing their limits and experiencing some short term pain for (hopefully) long term gain. Remember Siakam jacking 3's all season at a dismal rate? I'm sure with a guy like Fred they want him to develop into the type of player he's currently trying to be.
