Your comment had been "It's a Canadian tradition to ascend to the NBA and rest up in the summer.", but when questioned about the extant this "tradition", you now say "declined for whatever reason". Tough to debate someone that keeps moving the target.

Interesting list to justify fear that current young players may "decline". Going back as far as Wenningtin and Fox? Really?
Nash: put in over 10 years with the national team. He was in his 30s, with on-going back issues when he backed off. I don't think anybody anyone is talking about quite fits that scenario.
Wennington: played for 5 years, including world universiade team, was on 1984 Olympic team, then couldn't play as a pro until 1992 when pros were allowed, which he did. By the time next Olympics came, he was 33 and on the decline.
Fox: A unique one. Had nothing to do with "resting". He spent his summers chasing a future career as an actor, involved in numerous movie and TV projects. Does anyone currently fit such a profile?
Magloire: Don't know his story, but his game never came close to suitable for the international game. However you win that one, however much it has to do with current young players.
Dalembert: Wasn't a citizen until Aug 2007, and promptly joined the national team, until kicked off by Leo. Hardly fits the "tradition of resting in the summer". Sporadic?
Thompson: competed for Canada at Under 18s, and Under 19s. Only summer he hasn't been involved with Canada Basketball is 2011, when he was a fresh 20 year old 4th pick overall by the Cavs. Any chance they insisted he spend the summer preparing for his 1st NBA season? Hardly a "rest for the summer" scenario.
Sacre: He was involved with Canada Basketball from 2006 to 2010, where he got very little playing time for the senior team, at least in part because his game isn't suited for FIBA . Being a 60th pick in 2012, and a FA in 2013, he was scrambling for his NBA life both summers, and I'd be shocked that anybody doesn't understand his priority for those 2 summers was to prepare in every way possible for the Lakers, not sit on the bench for Canada's team.
Olynyk: Where did you see he didn't have plantar fasciitis? That he was practicing the week before means nothing. He was still at Canada's training camp, to still be involved in the program despite being unable to play, or do you think Team Canada didn't know about his Gonzaga practices and he pulled a fast one on them? PS. he has been involved with Canada basketball since Under-18s.
Wiggins: So you think a high school kid, who hadn't even played a game of college ball, and whose priority was preparing for the same, could have helped Canada be better against grown men? You bring this up to support "get to the NBA then rest for summers"? He wasn't even in college!

If you want to play the cynical *$&^@ over these young men who have committed, have at it, but that is a lame argument to support it.

No, here's a list of players who have declined for whatever reason:

Bill Wennington - 83 Worlds, 84 Olympics, 92 Olympics (what more do you want?)

Rick Fox (played only at 1994 World Championships) - Considers himself Jamaican, and had a REALLY bad experience dealing w/ the old Basketball Canada (Which was rumored to be pretty racist

Jamal Magloire (10 years or more) - Refused to play for Basketball Canada because of racism -- is now part of the Basketball Canada program

Steve Nash (about 10 consecutive years) -- Seriously? Dude was a part of the program from 1993-2007, and is the present GM!

Samuel Delambert (sporadic involement with the SNMT) - Well, when you get kicked off the team your play will obviously be sporadic. He put in his time, jumped through a lot of hoops with FIBA, but off the court stuff happened.

Tristan Thompson (declined in 2011) - Is part of the National Program, and played last year.

      Declining FIBA Americas last summer:

Kelly Olynyk (he was not injured as reported. KO was practicing at Gonzaga the week before SMNT camp) - Is part of the current program -- HE JUST GOT DRAFTED AND HADN'T SIGNED HIS CONTRACT! YOU WANT HIM TO RISK HIS FINANCIAL WELL-BEING?!!!

Robert Sacre - Is Sacre capable of making the current team?

Andrew Wiggins - Wiggins father is part of the program. Wiggins has already represented Canada.
Seriously. Enough with the "sky is falling attitude." The issues that encouraged guys like Magloire, and a long list of black GTA players with NCAA, and Euroleague history to not play no longer exist. It's the reason why Nash and Barrett took over Basketball Canada. Why the current program includes players who refused to help the past program. PAY ATTENTION. This is not the same Basketball Canada program.

EDIT: Damn, chico beat me to it!

Rick Fox grew up in the Bahamas and Warsaw, Indiana.

Mitchell Wiggins Sr. grew up in North Carolina and went to Florida St. and the NBA. He may be a dual citizen now but he never played for Basketball Canada. I believe Andrew Wiggins will again play for Canada, maybe not this summer.

Wiggins could have helped at sf last summer. That was the weakest spot. Nash gave Andrew the option of the U19 or the SMNT but he chose summer school and practice with KU players. I am not questioning that choice.

Thompson declined in 2011 because of insurance costs. Corey Joseph made less in the NBA so it was cheaper just to insure his contract.
Yeah, and then Jay Triano went out blamed our young players lack of international experience as the number one reason why we lost to lesser talented teams like the Dominican Republic, instead of taking his fair share of coaching criticism. Almost glad that Wiggins didn't get caught up in all that last year. After Triano flames out, we should consider hiring a successful international coach like David Blatt.

My one criticism of the coaching staff was that Corey Joseph was playing very well the first 5 games and he was getting huge minutes because when when he subbed off, the team had trouble scoring. Corey ran out of gas, such a tough schedule, and the team went for a tail spin, losing their last 3 games. They were in first place before that.

My bad, Bahamas - that's a big difference. The one thing I didn't double check in google.

I remember Mitchell Wiggins being offered a position at Basketball Canada a number of years back. He's not a listed staff member. He also has a son Mitchell Jr. which makes google searches impossible. I'm still confident that he's tied to the program. You don't have to be a Canadian t be tied to the program if you're not playing.

EDIT: You realize none of your criticisms change my point? AND I do know his father is an American who played for the USMNT.

In its toughest game of the tournament, the 2014 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team (5-0) remained perfect with a convincing 113-79 victory over Canada (4-1) to claim the 2014 FIBA Americas Championship gold medal on Tuesday night at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The USA upped its record at the zone championship to 48-2 and has now medaled in every U18 competition, having won seven gold medals (1990, 1994, 1998, 2006, 2010, 2012 and 2014), while capturing silver in 2008 and bronze in 2002. -

Good on Anthony. Love to see him have a good year and can only help Canada Basketball. Can't hurt that he and Thompson and Wiggins are playing on the same team.

For alot of reasons ie more space on the floor and also the burden of being the 1st overall pic will not be a story cause all eyes will be on Lebron coming home ..

I have followed Bennett since FIBA Under-17 World Championship, when he helped Canada win a bronze ..
