  • Just 100% + 100k for TPE's - salary matching rules are different for simultaneous and non-simultaneous trades.

Could also come in handy if we want to set up a SnT (like for Joseph) with much less salary going back the other way.

With 2015/16 Salary Cap is projected at $67.3 million , the Raptors with the trade has 9 players including first pick at $43.6 million plus 2.4 million for slot space allowing $21.3 million for free agency and to sign Thaddeus Young and sign a SF and $5 million for a backup center
Nope. 22.4 M in space. I've done the math.

              1. Ok , than trade for David Lee with an exchange of teams draft picks in 2016 ( not the Denver/Knicks pick) .
              2. Send TPE + 1st round pick for T Jones of Houston.
              3. Sign LW to a 4/26 deal. Wait till Lou finds another contract that actually nets him more monies after tax
              4. Sign 2nd pick from this year and last year at league minimum.
That will bring the team up to the salary cap.

This way you have four man rotation at forward / center position. Two open positions at SF and back up 3rd PG which will allow next year the team to have more cap space with Lee being a FA

why are the Raptors swaping first round picks for Lee. GSW would happily give up a first to dump Lee if no salary came back. That 15M for essentially a second rounder

                  • Dan: on a sign and trade, does a team have to renounce TPE to absorb a contract into available cap space?

                    Comment

                    • Yes. Cap space technically can't exist at the same time as a TPE.

                        That is shitty.

All this Aldridge commotion is cool but it really leaves the Raptors limited to improve.

I would hope there would be trades coming down the pipe line.

Well, Aldridge by himself improves the team. And it's not a one year gambit - 4 year contract means 4 years of moves to capitalize - and with the cap boom coming they will still have the ability to improve, especially with the abundance of picks they have. Imagine that Knicks pick ends up top 10, or less likely, even higher?

Yeah, Aldridge would definitely change the game. That said, not confident we can land him. He would suddenly make this team a legit East Contender (if we can fix the defence).

But IF we can, not sure how his contract would work with opt outs and bird rights. So let's say he signs here but with the opt outs (ala LeBron) to take advantage of the new cap figures next year (or the year after), since we wouldn't have had LA for 3 years yet, we wouldn't own his bird rights. So does that mean we would need to keep cap space to re-sign him at said opt out?

That would limit flexibility to really go "all-in" around a primed LA, & KL (& DD for arguments sake).

Yeah it would be a real shame if the Raptors couldn't improve at all apart from signing an All NBA player for the hole in their starting lineup.

You think LMA thinks he is going to deliver a championship to Toronto with the roster as constructed?

I would be fairly certain that any discussion revolves around how the team continues to grow and improve.

By the way, notice when it was written. Right around the time the rumours came out. I was thinking 2 or 3 moves down the road.
