Problem is, the Pistons are well over the cap and near the tax already. Unless they can get Smart for the MLE, how do they make such an upgrade? Let alone also finding a SF who can shoot.
Griffin was a horrible trade in hindsight. He's likely joined Carmelo Anthony in the "won't help ANY team at that cap hit" tier.

Just like you maybe you shouldn't trade with Masai Ujiri, don't trade with Jerry West

It was a terrible trade at the time. The salary is one of the worst in the league along with Wiggins and Wall. Except you can sell people that Wiggins is young.

Again, if i was the GM of a team like the Pistons who BADLY need a PG. The FIRST guy that i would target is Marcus Smart. I love that dude. Smart is the type of player you win with.

They already have Drummond and Griffin on theor team. Kennard is their SG. Add Smart to that team along with a SF who can shoot. That's a playoff team.
Agree that adding Smart and adding Casey puts that team in the running for home court next year... .
but they are pretty much capped out....
The Reggie Bullock and Jon Leuer deals will have them leaking oil for another couple years ....
There's no such thing as a 2nd round bust.

Nah, not so fast. Detroit will pound the rock first... Then anything is possible.

Pound the rock was the Toronto slogan. Smoke the rock will be Detroit's.

                    • IDK if I completely buy the fact that Casey was too stubborn to incorporate new ideas.

What if Casey just didn't believe that the players could adjust to a new system (basically proved in the playoffs).

We'll see this year - if the Pistons play the modern style of basketball, it would be a kick to the balls to the Raptors.

                      • Best of Luck to Casey. He has, at best more talent to work with in Detroit and at worst the same level of what he had here in Toronto. If he can get his stars to elevate their play the way he did in Toronto, the Pistons could be really good.

                        • Great for Casey. And the Raps don't have to pay his salary this year. Win-win.

Q:> Does Detroit even have a GM yet? It will be interesting to see how Casey does under a GM, other than Masai, when it comes to holding the players accountable.

IMO, that's the very under-rated part of the whole Casey-Masai relationship dynamic that allowed Casey to play the good cop, lovable Dad role to the Raptor's players, because Masai always got in there at key times and told Kyle, Demar and whoever else what needed to be said. If the next Piston's GM is a more hands off type and/or he doesn't have a good working relationship with the players, then Casey's going to have to do it himself. Not sure if Casey actually has that 'bad cop' in him.

They’re not close to having as much talent as the Raptors

I was referring to their two stars vs. our two stars at the same points when Casey first joined the respective organizations. DeMar and Lowry weren't All Stars prior to Casey getting to Toronto where as Griffin and Drummond already are (were).
