I'd be willing to wager that they strike out.

Probably not. We're seeing more and more that big name players don't necessarily sign with "cities" anymore, they prefer winners with the infrastructure already put in place

I think LA is trying to do what Miami did when Lebron/Wade/Bosh teamed up. You don't get Lebron until you also get a guy like George or Cousins or Paul. PG may be happy playing with Russ, Paul with Harden and Cousins has a torn Achilles.

So if you can't get one of those guys Lebron's not coming. And your going to have to settle for B-level stars like DeAndre Jordan and Avery Bradley.

If they wait until 2019 they won't have Lebron.. but they could get guys like Klay and Love (who has a PO that year).

Probably won't work. Ideally you should have one superstar already on the roster that you can re-sign and go over the cap, like Miami had with Wade. Also halps tremendously with the recruiting pitch to the new guys. Elite FAs are looking for that big 3.

Hard to say what goes on in the minds of players... who are the candidates to fill those two max spots...
Conventional wisdom says the guys who the Lakers could target are James, CHris Paul, Paul George, and maybe Klay Thompson...

Lebrons other half is from Akron and her folks and family still live there... She uprooted once and didn't want to shake up her kids lives when he left Miami to come back to Cleveland... I get LA is light years better than Cleveland .. but you have to consider what the one person who LBJ has to listen too feels about disrupting family life again...but have to think life in Bel Air is more desirable than lake effect snow.

Chris Paul and LBJ are friends ... A lineup featuring Paul and James is very workable in LA... Trade LaVars Kid to some remote outpost like Memphis or Orlando for a prospect or two or a prospect and a 1st round pick would be poetic justice and let fellow banana boat riders James and Paul see what they could do in LA... but Paul has to walk away from Houston who just might give the Warriors a run for the West this year and if they get by them or just miss why does Paul leave ?...

Front to back Pauls... Chris and George.... Is that enough to propel the Lakers to contender status.. mmm.. personal opinion is no.. makes them very relative though... sort of like Houston west...

How about the current flavour of the moment... James and George.... Two seriously good wings... Lonzo at PG to give them the ball and never shoot again... George gets to move positions as well. .this time to SG ... Lebron facilitates as the point forward at SF .. Randle and Kuzma to bring mobility as bigs.... Could be great.... BUT.. PG has to leave OKC and Westbrook who has more miles left on his career than James ....

Can't see the Lakers going after Thompson unless George James and Paul say no...and why does Klay want to leave the Warriors....

                Interesting to say the least.....

And if both and George and Paul stay put....not sure Lebron takes the plunge... which leaves Magic Johnson standing at the alter with no suitor in sight .. no high first round pick....and a wad of cash he can't really spend well....
There's no such thing as a 2nd round bust.

He can spend it on more tampering tweets and comments for all the future free agents he thinks are lining up to come to "Showtime"

Magic still thinks its the 80s and you rub elbows with The Shining's Jack Nicholson, bring your wife or mistress in your finest minks and a couple grams of cocaine in the trousers.
