      Bill Russell
      Wilt Chamberlain
      Magic Johnson
      Larry Bird

These are favorites. No point in getting into GOAT conversations when for all these guys, especially Bill and Wilt, basketball was not the all consuming 365 day activity it is now for top professionals. If Russell and Chamberlain had trained as intensively as most current all stars, it is hard to imagine how good they could have been. Similar story with Bird and Johnson, though they were part of the era when basketball turned into a huge corporate business, so put in more time on their craft. But the exercise regimens, the diets, the hours of going over tape, the access to personal coaches etc. was not near what it is now. The quality of the shoes, the taping, the support leggings and wraps etc. all help prolong an athletes career.

All of the above guys were transcendent in some way and make for great stories.

I love the story around DeMar and his refusal to stop improving his game. 20 years from now you will still be able to point to him and his career and say, "This is how you show that you want something... not by talking, but by doing. Anyone can exceed limits that are put on them by others. Go out and be your own DeMar Derozan."

I'll try and provide a little context for my selections.

My favourite player growing up was Penny Hardaway. I tried to mold my game around his (i.e. a non-prototypical PG, who could shoot, defend, hit from outside or take it to the hole. I even followed his career ending knee injuries!).

Was a big fan of Ray Allen too, mainly because of He Got Game.

The player who I acknowledged as the best player in my lifetime, was Michael Jordan. No justification required.

My favourite current player who isn't a Raptor, is Steph Curry. He's changed the way the game is played, without needing elite physical tools. A generational talent.

My favourite Raptor is Kyle Lowry. The heart and soul of the best era in franchise history.

I loved Vince Carter as a kid. Now a days I just follow the league and the raptors and don't care for any players as I'm old and grouchy. Some players I tolerate more than others I guess

Jordan, Hakeem, Bird, Nash and Lowry are probably my top 5.

If we're talking just "favorite" then:

              Penny Hardaway
              Jason Williams
              Shawn Kemp
              Michael Jordan
              Dennis Rodman
Only one thing matters: We The Champs.

Man, nobody talks about Shawn Kemp. I remember him kind of tearing up the league.

                    Kyle Lowry
                    Michael Jordan
                    Shaq
                    Kevin Garnett
                    Damon Stoudamire

                    In that order.

Was actually surprised that this was way more difficult than I anticipated.

I always think of who my starting 5 would be and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s this if it’s just favourite players.

                        Prime Derrick Rose
                        Vince
                        Scottie Pippen
                        Kevin Garnett
                        Bill Walton

Those guys are all really fun to watch.

                          In chronological order:
                          Kemp
                          Stockton
                          Nash
                          Leonard

Kemp and Stockton because I always rooted against the Jordan Bulls when I was young. Nash because of the Canadian connection and because those Suns were definitely my favorite non-Raptors team ever. I liked Leonard even when he was in college and I really wanted the Raptors to draft him, and I followed him really closely since; and San Antonio is just such an admirable team. I can't really pick a fifth that stands out to me. Maybe Malone or Duncan.

I'm intentionally not listing any Raptors, because I'm a total homer and my enthusiasm for even average Raptors players dwarfs my enthusiasm for the greatest non-Raptors.

I had a Gary Payton jersey. Sold it for beer money.
