  • Kawhi Leonard

Thoughts on whether we could get him?

OG + JV + Norm + pick works in the trade machine. Obviously we'd have to wait till the draft to be able to trade our 2019.

I know it might seem like a lot (or not enough depending on your perspective), but disgruntled superstars are hard to find.

he'll go to a major US market, unless toronto is coming off a finals appearance.

Of course I would love Kwahi, who wouldn't? The problem isn't Kwahi's current contract, it's his next contract.

He'll be making closer to $40M+. Our owners have deep pockets, but to spend $100M on 3 guys (or more like $120M on 4 guys) on the roster is a bit much to ask for.

As a fan I would love it.. but I just don't see a way without trading one of DD or Kyle and/or both Serge and JV to make it work.

Does anyone know about KL quadriceps issue being replicated in another NBA player who had to like Kawhi stay away from the game for as long as he has?

Assuming he has a "real" medical issue (he is currently in NY with his group and Spurs med. staff monitoring his workouts)... I would be hesitant to acquire him just on medical grounds.... great as a player he is. I find it difficult to believe he is faking it.

Well you've got to remember that 2019-20 is the first year of Kawhi's supermax and the last year of practically all our major contracts (DeMar has a player option the following year), so it'd be a single year of paying extra luxury tax, as Kyle/Serge will be on significantly reduced salaries if they stay on the year after.

We're at $133 million in 2019-20 already thanks to Norm's contract. OG+Norm+JV is $30 million, vs Kawhi's 1st year supermax of $38 million. And CJ is at $8.7 million expiring, so you could likely shed him too if you wanted no impact to salaries that year.

So the question then comes down to....

Do you value the depth of OG+JV+Norm and possibly CJ, or do you go after one of the true top 5 players in the NBA (assuming he can be healthy again)?

It's a gamble to commit $219 million given the injury situation... but think about where we'll be in 2020-21. If we don't restock the cupboard with another star, we're likely going to have to rebuild from scratch. And we might be too good to even hit the top of the draft.

Given that Kawhi replaces OG, Jakob replaces JV, Norm is essentially an 11th/12th man now, and CJ is going to be 33... I would definitely go for it.

But who knows if he'll even be available at this time. It's just sound and fury out of San Antonio these days.

Someone will offer a star for him. This won't cut it.

It would never happen (for several different reasons), but it would work on the trade machine

                http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yczz684y

                PG: Lowry/FVV/Patty Mills
                SG: Buddy Hield/Norm
                SF: Kawhi Leonard/ CJ Miles
                PF: OG/Skal Labissiere
                C: JV/Ibaka/Nogueira

                  Trades for Kawhi and Pau:

A core of Kawhi, Lowry, Pau and DeRozan would be lethal. Pau is getting old, but his stats are still awesome, no reason he can't keep it up. DeRozan as the 4th option in a Nick Nurse offence behind Kawhi, Lowry and Pau would probably mean all-time records would be broken. This team would have fire power.

But at what cost? Assuming some picks and cash mixed in, here are some options.

Worst case scenario: JV, Delon, OG, Siakam, CJ (https://is.gd/YoDcuN)

No way the Spurs say no to this. That's a lot of win-now talent, a potential too.

Best case scenario: JV, OG, Siakam, Norm, CJ. (https://is.gd/GZSxBj)

Keeping Delon would be amazing, put probably mean more picks, etc. If we could somehow get Kawhi and keep Delon, tho, then send them Norm instead,

Since Spurs know their advanced stats tho, keeping Delon is probably unlikely, maybe keeping one of OG (https://is.gd/9mvGPa) or Siakam (https://is.gd/eB2f2c) by substituting Norm might work.

Suspect this would put Raptors in the tax, so that means the org sees a chance to win big now.

All pipe dreams, but this is the time in the off season where it's fun to pass the pipe around.

Yeah, playoff choking aside, Raptors are one of the deepest teams in the NBA as currently constructed, so if Masai wanted to put a competitive package for Kawhi, he not only could do it, but could also retain a starting lineup strong enough to get out of the East (which would be a great incentive for Kawhi to stick around). The window is closing. If there was ever a time to pull a risky trade that's now.

I will just say that imo we shouldn't give both Siakam and OG on any trade. Our playoff defence is what needs to improve now, and they're our most versatile/stronger defenders, so losing both is a big hit, even for Kawhi. Ideally you want to pair Kawhi with one of OG/Siakam (preferrably OG) on the wing defence.
