  • Everything Rawle Alkins

    At least it's something.

Alkins was the 49th ranked player by ESPN tonight (the 2nd best player remaining after the draft), and 51st in a consensus big board with five different rankings.

    SI Scouting Report

    Height: 6'4" | Weight: 220 | DOB: 10/29/97 (20)
    Stats: 13.1 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 35.9% 3FG

Bio: A strong, well-rounded wing player, Alkins was on the first-round cusp last season before returning to Arizona. After breaking his foot in September, he battled through the season at less than 100% as a key part of the Wildcats’ rotation. His toughness and scoring ability make him an interesting prospect toward the middle of the draft.

    Strengths

    • Explosive athlete. Can play above the rim and finish despite heavier frame. Difficult to knock off his line going to the basket.

    • Big enough to defend larger players. Has a strong body and a 6’9” measured wingspan. Should become a useful player on that end.

    • Motor is always running. Unselfish and makes small, winning plays. Embraced secondary scoring role even with difficult on-court factors at Arizona.

    Weaknesses

    • Streaky jump shooter. Has some touch but shot 36.5% from three over two seasons. Made just 34.3% of all jumpers as a sophomore. Consistency has to improve.

    • Ballhandling and self-creation skills will need to improve against NBA wings who can match him athletically. Has a tendency to play bully ball and will have to diversify his approach.

    • Had some defensive struggles on the perimeter this season, which is attributable on some level to his foot injury.

Arizona’s NBA-style defense should help and Alkins’ slashing style could help him draw contact as a bench option.

That's a pretty good pickup for not having a pick. After FVV, I'm ready to believe this guy will be a 6th man candidate within 2 years.

But realistically, he's a minimum signing when they need cheap depth, who can shoot a bit, defend, and sub into a few spots. Smart signing. I expect it will be a FVV type deal, 2 year minimum. Watch for a reported guarantee, if they really like him it will be $100k+.

Intriguing for sure.. Hopefully Masai hits another homer with this guy. Seems to fit the culture that Masai wants. Not going to be a star I don't think but if he can hit his 3's he'll be a keeper.

Trier would've been the better undrafted pick up from Zona.

Good call, Mixx. After the Cavs debacle, Masai's going all in on goons to get under Lebron's skin? lol.

Alkins, 20, is a combo guard originally from Brooklyn who is known around the league for his defensive versatility. He also scored 20 or more points in five of the 23 games he played for Arizona last season, showing his value as a potential two-way player at the next level.

Some have compared his game to fellow New Yorker Lance Stephenson due to his toughness on both offense and defense. He currently ranks in the Top 30 on draft big boards for both The Ringer and Sports Illustrated.

I like this signing. I hope he impresses in Summer League. You can never have enough depth at SG/SF.

Lance has something no player has. He is batshit crazy.

Trier signed a two-way deal with the Knicks, which is better than the camp invite that Alkins got from the Raptors. With the state of the Knicks, he's probably got a halfway decent chance to at least spend some time at the end of the bench, which may be a more attractive proposition than battling for a position in the Raptors backcourt.
