  • CBC Sports: Leonard vs. DeRozan: A mid-season examination of the controversial trade

On July 18, 2018, reports surfaced that the Toronto Raptors would sign Jordan Loyd to a two-way contract.

In other news, the Raptors also acquired Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, and a first-round pick.

    Here's a mid-season examination of the trade.

This review is a little too simple for the word count. Kawhi is arguably the best defender in the league and a NBA Finals MVP. DeRozan's biggest strength(scoring) is arguably not on the same level as Kawhi, he also can't guard his own shadow and speaking of his shadow, at times that's the only thing that showed up in some playoff games.

I think tonight will illustrate quite clearly who won the trade.

Yeah, the W/L may be similar last year to this year but that's about it. Among the many differences is one key one: Lowry/DD starting units rarely dominated, last year's success in particular was propped up by great bench play.

Now the starters are great together. It's a huge difference that bodes well for the playoffs.

Not to mention we're 6-6 missing 2 of our top 5 players for most of that time, where we'd still likely be comfortably in first ahead of the Bucks who have not had the same issues

Yup.. last year we were powered by the bench mob. This year it's our starters. I like the way this year is going so far. I wish we had this team last year.

Sunny days aren't special if not for rain...each step, each failure and success has been a building block. Masai was never on a treadmill, never stagnant. This has all been necessary to achieve what was been talked about openly since 2013.

I'm really confused about this narrative. The starters were one of the best heavy minutes groups in the entire NBA last season.

                  This year's most-used lineup: +11.1 net rating
                  Last year's most-used lineup: +9.4 net rating

Last year's issue was not remotely the starting lineup. It was one of the team's greatest strengths. Even in the playoffs, that held up, and even against the Cavs before the coaching staff abandoned it for no reason.

Yes this year's starters (Ibaka lineup, most used 5 man): +11.1
This year's starters (JV lineup, 2nd most used 5 man): +21.4
This year's "bench mob" (5th most used 5 man): -5.1

                    Last year's starters: +9.4
Last year's "bench mob" (2nd most used 5 man): +19.2

They rode the all bench units hard last year and it propped the team up. This year the top 4 most used lineups are some combination of KL/DG/KL/PS/SI/JV/FVV and they're all net positives. The all bench's rating is 24 points worse than last year and dropped in usage. It's a big difference in how they're playing and who's driving the scores up.

Great news for this year is there's your playoff top 7 guys, all proven net positives with a combination of lineups between them. Last year we were all wondering what the hell they were going to do with a 10 man rotation and a 5 man hockey bench in the playoffs.

And yet the 5 man hockey bench was still fine in the playoffs - the problem is we lost our 6th man from that bench unit. Never mind that we also established a neat 8-9 man rotation during the year with successful DD+bench and Lowry+bench units as well. And last year's starting group when you include FVV closing subs also had a big minutes lineup with a +20 net rating. The starters have not improved much from last year. The bench is just way worse (and the transition lineups less damaging).

The positive sign is we have Kawhi instead of DeMar (who was the single biggest issue for the team in the playoffs these past several years, even beyond Casey/lineups). It's not much more than that.

Raptors won this trade no doubt
Raptors better start getting the best of Kawhi's services though, because as of now it seems like the team is failing to capitalize when Kawhi gets double teamed, a little too often
