I kind of cringe at quick summaries like that. "Not consistent" is thrown as much as "clutch/big game player" or "intense/will to win" type of platitudes. Usually they should all be filed under the "eye test" scouting reports.

3 point shooters by and large are all streaky. That's just the nature of the beast. Hitters are streaky in baseball. Scorers are streaky in hockey. Is one player consistently more streaky than another? Perhaps...perhaps not
Ross was always a bit soft or indifferent. He never showed another gear in the playoffs, and even tended to shrink under pressure, if anything. Just kind of goes through the motions. It's harder to watch someone like Ross fail to grow as a player as well, because he has all the physical talent he needs and unlike many young players, came into the league with a solid enough jumper. So he ends up being a guy who we've seen fail to perform under pressure, and fail to grow in general in any meaningful way.

Not sure I care about adding Ellington, but I haven't seen him as much as we've all seen Ross. Doesn't have much playoff experience and wasn't spectacular (though he shot well from deep in the brief appearance Miami made last year). Not sure what we trade to get him though. Does Miami take Miles? Miami is also going to aim for the playoffs, so I don't think they'd care about something like Miles plus a 2nd rounder over just keeping Ellington. Think you can say the same going after Ross. What is it worth to trade for him?

Probably just better off hoping that the time off with his hip injury will help Miles get his head right. If anyone has just been mentally fighting themselves it's Miles. Maybe catching his breath will be good.

The only guy who's a real cause for concern is Lowry. We need to get that guy as healthy as possible. You can see his shot doesn't look right and it is most likely the pain in his back. Hopefully they manage it properly. Can't afford him to be at like 65-70% for the playoffs.

On the plus side, the schedule gets a lot easier from here on in. A lot more two day breaks, the All Star weekend coming up, (I think Lowry learned his lesson there) and, I believe, more games against weaker teams which should make for fewer minutes for Lowry.

I have written at length elsewhere about Ross's inconsistency when his name has come up as a target, so I didn't repeat it, but maybe you didn't see it. But it has to do with Ross's inconsistent form, which produces inconsistent results.

Of the players who shot 1000 threes over the past five years he is 42nd in 3pt%. Of the 57 who shot 5 attempts per game over the past three years he is 31st in %. To compare to specialist shooters, Korver is 1st, Redick is 4th, and Miles is 26th. (Ellington is 19th.)

I'm surprised that someone who watches basketball and specifically the Raptors as much as you do would consider consistency a platitude. Ross rarely put together more than a month of consistent results while he was here. Clutchness is also a real phenomenon, as some players shrink from the moment (which is why some people shit on DeRozan here to this day).

If anything it is a more legit thing to say than dismissing JV's dislocated thumb because "hockey players are so tough". That's the type of platitude that should really make you cringe.

          Lots of interesting rumours here:

          Deveney is fairly credible too.

As per http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/2...jr-sources-say, Dallas is trying to deal both Dennis Smith and Wes Matthews.

Matthews is a larger expiring ($18 mil) *and* a 38-percent 3-point shooter, while Dennis Smith Jr would likely allow us to include Fred or (more likely) Delon in a deal as well. There are (hopefully) better options out there, but this is an option, at least, to shore up our 3-point shooting off the bench, if the price is right, and to reduce our luxury tax hit next year if Kawhi resigns at the max.

Makes you wonder why Dallas is trading DSJR when they just drafted him in the lottery in 2017. And with Barea out for the year they could use a PG. I don't think he's that good.

And apparently Dallas fans hate Wes Matthews with a passion. Not sure why.. I never watch their games. But he's shooting well. And was always known as that classic 3&D player. Maybe the "D" part of his game has fell off a cliff. Although he couldn't be any worse than what CJ is doing for us this year.

I think Matthews had an achilles injury awhile back, but not sure that's why he's in the doghouse with Mavs fans. That said, DSJ would inject some youth, athleticism and penetrating ability into the PG position, which is needed on this Raps squad.

                  Something like: Norm/CJ/Wright for Matthews/DSJ/Broekhoff

Underrated part of this trade would be netting about 17 million in expiring salary THIS off-season by getting Powell & Miles off the books and letting Matthews walk. That could come in handy in re-signing Kawhi and making some trades to defend our title next year.

Can Andrew Bogut still play? He had that bad injury a few years ago, but supposedly he's playing in Australia this year. If he still has anything left in the tank he could be a nice pickup as an insurance backup big for the playoff run. Super high BBIQ.

DSJ is just a bad fit with Luka and there is a chance that his ceiling is a lot lower than predicted. The fact that he isn't clearing 70% on his free throws is a bad sign; he's not an elite passer or defender like Lonzo to make up for being a potentially bad-average shooter (I don't trust his 3pt percentage).

Dallas is pretty smart. They drafted BPA in Luka and are now cutting bait on DSJ while he still has the shine of potential on him.

Yeah, I'm starting to get Michael Carter-Williams vibes from DSJ. Remember MCW, the rookie of the year?

Trading for Wes Matthews or Robin Lopez would be a mistake: we would end up taking on more salary for a player who's almost certainly going to end up getting bought out unless another team gets really desperate for them, and most of the serious contenders aren't desperate enough to spend 14-18 million on the likes of Robin Lopez or Wes Matthews.

The buyout market should be rich this year, and the only serious reason to trade is to upgrade CJ to a player who can actually hit threes this year.

My understanding is that Wes Matthews is an expiring, which might be a reason to trade for him instead of signing him on the buyout market; it depends on how concerned one is about luxury tax if we resign Kawhi, I suppose.

I thought I had seen something saying that if Lopez was bought out, he would want to sign with Golden State, but I can't find it now. (If so, he'd likely be behind both Cousins and Green in the rotation at the 5, and would be doing it entirely to be a front-runner, ugh.) As a fierce competitor out on the floor, he'd probably be a great fit for our frontcourt until June, despite being a bit of a headcase. However, I'm less sure that we would want to (or be able to) make the trade for him than for Matthews, though, even though I can't put my finger on why.
