He was longer/taller than most of his competition so he could go up and over. His team also had shooters spread over the floor allowing him room.
Coming to Toronto, he was hardly a focal point of the offense or considered a threat, the added bulk and resulting loss of athleticism made that asset essentially nonexistent but he was still not part of the offense or considered a threat by his teammates and coaches, and the team doesn't have the spacing around him to allow the room in the lane.
Teams just jam the paint versus Toronto. It is only the freak athletes of the league who can get above the rim in those conditions. JV isn't a freak athlete.
Luckily he has adapted and become one of the most efficient post up players in the league...but he still isn't considered a force or a threat by his teammates or coaches. Oh well.
