  • Nobody is untouchable on this team....

However, JV and Lowry better bring in mad return. Like top 5 pick and a young guy or two. Lowry top 2 pick with how he has been playing.

DD, because of his contract status, wont bring in much right now.

Trading Carroll won't bring in people better than him.

Everyone else doesn't have enough value and are pretty much trade filler at this point.

Broken up into sections because tl/dr.

      DD:
No way DD gets traded during the season, you don't get very good returns if anything for a few month rental. That's the exact opposite of maximizing the value of your assets. Like trying to sell people popcorn as they walk to their car after a movie. Sure someone might bite, but not at movie theater prices.

DD will almost certainly be resigned to a contract around $20M per season. He's playing really well this year, the best year of his career. He will likely make the all star game too. That's not someone you just let walk away for nothing.

As for him being a part of the long term future of the team, that is quite uncertain. The one thing for sure is that to maximize the value of DD as an asset, we need to bring him back on a long term deal at the best price possible. Anything under $20M per season is golden, but a contract slightly above $20M per season sounds reasonable too. If that doesn't sound right to you, get ready, because contracts are going through the roof this offseason with the new cap moving into effect. Guys who sign multi-year deals are only going to do it with an eye on the $100M average cap over the next 4 seasons. (For reference, a $20M deal would be the same as a $14M deal this season).

      Others:
Resigning DD will have us locked in with him until December next season, so we will have him at least to start next year. So that leaves the major trade chips that might not be Ujiri guys as JV, Ross, PPat, and Lowry.

      Lowry:
If Lowry is ever going to be moved, it has to be this offseason, as he'll certainly opt out of the final year of his contract. I love me some Lowry, but everyone else does too, so he could bring in a real game changer (read: Superstar-ish) that is a better long term fit. We have our 2 PG's of the future (CoJo, Wright), so it's the position we're most prepared to move a starter from.

      JV:
JV could also potentially bring back star level talent that fits better, simply because he's star level talent, and he's signed long term on a very reasonable-to-cheap deal. If Bebe continues to blossom, this move becomes more palatable, as we could afford to bring back Biyombo on a raise if Bebe is our new starter since he's on a rookie deal.

      Ross and PPat:
Ross and PPat are both role players who can be swapped out for better fits, or packaged with another guy to make contracts work. I'm pretty sure the whole reason we signed Ross to an extension was to turn him into a more valuable trade piece. Teams value certainty, and aren't thrilled about trading for a guy only to have to begin negotiations with him on his first big contract.

      Conclusion:
We've got lots of ways to maneuver this roster into something more like Masai wants, but trading DD just won't be the move until at least mid December next year when he becomes tradeable on his new contract.
      Good post.

The thing about a sign and trade, you don't really get a choice of who you're trading them to with a guy like KD. When we S&Ted Bosh to the Heat it wasn't because the Heat had the most to offer, it was because he was going there anyways and we wanted something in return. It'll be the same with KD.
Ya, we S&T for TPE (Toilet Paper Excemption) with Bosh. Useless... Colangelo's absolute failure. Should of lost Bosh for nothing so it made him more honest that nothing was ever going to be gained if Bosh left.

We also got a pick back (the JV pick, though it was protected so it would have ended up being the pick that we traded for Lowry, we would have gotten JV anyway) and a MIA first rounder as I recall.

This makes absolutely no sense. Bosh was gone either way, why is getting nothing preferable to getting something?
