They are missing open shots because they're being sped up and rushing their shots. The Pacers are pro-actively forcing them out of their comfort zone and they don't know how to adjust (system-wise or decision-making wise) to the quickened pace and intensity of playoff basketball and/or simply don't have the elite talent.

It's almost impossible for us fans watching at home to appreciate the extra fraction of a second that is being taken away from them to make their decisions or get square for a shot like they would in the regular season. To top that off, Indy's not bailing them out with touch fouls. Pacers are just a superbly coached defensive team and have been for years and different players under Vogel.
Stop acting like Toronto's the only team in the playoffs being defended well. It's been that way for everyone forever.

    • Re: Jerry Stackhouse - he was still on the roster for Casey's first year in Dallas. (Tom Sterner was there, too.)

      That is a terrible quote.

This is the thing about "we have to give Indy more credit." Sure, we do. But if we're honestly going to talk about a 2nd or 3rd round ceiling, this team is going to play against good > great defenses. That's the playoffs. They have to be able to deal with it.

Take a look at some top starting playoff guards in the East: Kemba Walker, Jeff Teague, Isaiah Thomas, Reggie Jackson, Dragic, Wade, Kyrie Irving. Nobody has fallen of the cliff quite like Kyle and Demar... again, at historic levels.

Some guards are actually stepping it up, like Kemba & especially Thomas, who is the only legitimate scoring threat on the Celtics. And yet both of the Raps all-stars are crapping the bed epically?

I give Indy/Vogel/PG all the credit in the world... but what the Raps backcourt is doing is unprecedented (in a bad way).

Yeah Thomas is probably the best example. He's shown up in the playoffs not only against a better defensive team in ATL but also with less offensive options around him to take attention away. Stars go up against great D in the playoffs all the time. "Our guys" have been bad. Simple as that.

It's not as simple as that. Brad Stevens adjusted in game 3 by changing his starting lineup and playing 4 point guards (his words from the press conference, he includes ET). He moved IT off-ball and Thomas erupted for 42.

To keep this series alive, the Celtics needed Thomas to get loose after a combined 12-for-36 shooting performance in Games 1 and 2. So Brad Stevens utilized Thomas off the ball, almost exclusively. The Hawks had virtually no answer, falling behind big early before ultimately dropping Game 3, 111-103.

Yeah probably should've taken note of that. Turner in the starting lineup acting as the PG allowed IT to get open for good looks in Games 3 & 4. Also had Jerebko out there to provide more floor spacing (I mentioned this in another thread).

Lowry is missing a lot of good looks already. We need Stevens to help figure out something with DeMar.

How about have Amir Johnson set some screens for him.

Kyle's shooting-elbow certainly doesn't seem to be helping the situation. That is, Kyle needs his 3-point shot to be great, and DeMar needs Kyle to be great to be great. And Casey just needs both of them to be great, which is tough to get with Kyle shooting the way he is.

                    • Casey's horrible scramble defense and all bench lineups both made appearances today

                      Awfully coached game. Awful

Dude our bench lineups and our defense were on point to start the 2nd and to start the 4th. It was the starters (minus derozan) who struggled.

Really? I liked a lot of his decisions: starting 2pat, Powell over carroll, bb over jv, not bringing derozan in until later than normal despite the fact he was scoring

Bogus, he did everything most have been asking for around here. Started Patterson, didn't put Scola on the floor, ran out those small ball lineups. Everything but bench Demar I guess eh.

And that scramble defense reared it's ugly head only because of turnovers and transition. Indy did a fine job of pushing the pace and getting mismatches in those situations, and the Raps, slow to get back were forced to pick up the closest player on D. And this despite the fact that Casey stressed before the game (and Nurse echoed at halftime) that getting back off missed shots and turnovers was key to the D. Players dropped the ball there, not Casey.

                            • Wow. DeMar & Ross at the 4 actually worked. Dumb luck or carefully planned? Who cares those were awesome lineups. More of that in Game 6!

                              • The panic was real for Casey this game. He threw out random lineups out there. He had times when both Kyle and Demar were sitting.
