Re the idea of re-signing DD so we can trade him. IF Ujiri soft talks him into taking less than max couldnt/shouldnt DD get a no trade clause? Pretty sure a player wouldnt want to be told we love you so much this is your home sign for less then trade him to Minnesota or wherever.

You need 8 years of service to be eligible for a no trade clause. Demar had played 7 years

Someone posted this in the offseason thread, but some perspective for those who think DeMar making 25M a year is insane. The money in 2017 gets even crazier



He'd be making like 60% of what the 2017 max guys are going to be getting if we can sign him to a flat 25M per year deal.

The thing is, people have been talking about how bad it would look if we let DeMar walk. That is debatable to me.

But I do know we would look awful if we signed him for a hometown discount and traded him in the same year.

The only way he gets traded in year 1 is if we're disastrously bad..below .500 around the deadline. Or a first round exit maybe gone in the offseason. And with both of those scenarios he would probaby have to play terrible too.

Probably wouldn't get dealt until at least year 3 of not reaching our goals.

Correction, emergence of JV as a top option, coupled with improved play of Powell (and overall defence) and the cap space.

If keeping DeMar is just about "perception and culture" it would be really stupid for us to re-sign him. There are more reasons than just that.

I hope demar is sincere about this offseason being all about defense and court awareness. He's a bonafide all star now. He's a top 10 or 15 scorer. His scoring has probably nearly peaked. But the book is out on him now. One dimesional scorer. The only way to go up now is to become more well rounded. He has to know this. He won't make all nba going from 23 ppg to 27. He needs to become a better facilitator, and much better defender. Then he will be in the same discussion as the klay Thompson and jimmy butlers, best 2 in the league. And you know he wants it. He's done the all star thing, now he wants all nba, maybe a couple 5th place votes for mvp like kyle got. That has to be his goal.

I'm somewhat confident we see a more well rounded team oriented demar next year. He's obviously goal driven, and hes now firmly established as an elite scorer. The next step is to become an elite PLAYER.
