lol at the "bebe doesn't have anything to prove in summer league" truthers

      y'all wild
Do they really need 4 summer leagues to get a read on him? His summer would be better spent training elsewhere, not in a glorified street ball tourny.

Oh woe is us, this franchise is a laughing stock...no wait, we're eastern conference finalists and Jonas has developed into an absolute beast.

Casey wanted JV to put on weight to be like Hibbert?

Isn't that some story we made up?
If we knew half as much about coaching an NBA team as we think, we"d know twice as much as we do.

            • We now know that most of JV's "weight issue" (which was never that big a deal anyway) was little more than him not sticking to his nutrition plan.

Everyone wants 19-year old draftees to put on weight, and JV looked like a twig back then, he had to put on weight.

This. It wasn't like a Casey thing to be like Hibbert.

It kind of was. Too lazy to dig for a quote, but he kept talking about wanting valanciunas being a big rim protector like Roy Hibbert and Tyson chandler, every good team has one, principle of verticality etc. And that's why he is sometimes benched.

Then a year or two ago when jv became big and strong casey changed course and started following a new trend. Now it was "centers need to guard small guys and switch all over the perimeter. And that's why he is sometimes benched.

JV was told to gain weight over the summer and, as I recall the club had him on a weight gaining/bulking up regimen. He gained on the order of 20 pounds and continued to gain during his first season.

I did a search for "jonas valanciunas rookie weight gain" and found three articles talking aobut the start of the 2013 season and his added bulk.

"...Nikola Pekovic, the Montenegrin who plays the post for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 6-foot-11 beast, rewarded with a five-year, US$60-million deal this off-season, is essentially shorthand for toughness incarnate in this league. And it was for the likes of him that Valanciunas put on some weight in the off-season. That muscle, which caused Valanciunas’s Lithuanian coach to complain that his centre had lost some of his agility, is necessary if a young man is going to withstand 82 games in the post in this league."

                        • By “best,” one assumes that Bayno meant he wants Valanciunas to be the best help defender he can be.

“Best in the league,” Bayno clarifies. “We want him to be No. 1 in the NBA. We want that as a goal. Right now, [Pacers centre Roy] Hibbert is the best. We want him chasing Hibbert. If he comes up a little short, hopefully he’s going to be elite, one of the top five in the league.”

Well, per RealGM, add Roy Hibbert to that list of originators with imitators. As explained by RealGM’s wiretap, Hibbert has started to make utilizing verticality famous throughout the NBA community:

The Toronto Raptors have worked extensively with Jonas Valanciunas on the "Hibbert", which is jumping vertically to challenge shooters instead of reaching.

                          • Well, Jonas has become great at challenging with the principle of verticality. And his added strength/mass did help absorb and dole out punishment in doing so. He was just a tad chunkier than was optimal due to diet.

This year, the weight was down, speed up and there didn't appear to be any significant drop off in strength.
