Ben Wallace has 2137 block, 7038 defensive rebounds

Dikembe Mutombo has 3289 blocks, 8551 defensive rebounds
More to defense than just that. Can't ignore Wallace's steals and very low personal fouls... that's some of the biggest things that sets him apart from Biyombo and every other defensive minded bigman.

Personal fouls are something you can get better at. Look at Amir. BB has done better job with that as a starter as well.

Amir went from an absurd 6+ fouls per 36 to 4 later on with the Raptors... so "really bad", to just "not good". Ben Wallace has never exceeded 2.5 fouls per 36 after his first 4 years in the league. That's incredible for a big man. Bismack on the other hand is entering his 5th year in the league and is averaging his highest foul total per 36 in his career (5.1).

You can be a good defensive center, without being Ben Wallace... just like how you can be a good offensive PG without being Curry.

Biyombo is young but he isnt a prospect. He is more or less what he is

            • Anyone can get better - just requires opportunity and the right fit. Biyombo plays well next to DD and KL. And I think that says more about our guards than anything. Don't mind seeing JV off the bench for a few games but I'd like to see JV still average over 30mpg.

Same with JJ. These arent lack of reps. JJ cant shoot jumpers and Biyombo has terrible hands. All his time in the leaugue jst confirms it

It really depends on the player and what he can and can not do.Bennett looks like he has upside but Biyombo is who he is

Biyombo may not change much but you could have said the seme thing about Whiteside too. Some guys click in the right system. Toronto seems like a good fit for him. He's not needed at all on offense except for put back dunks and offense rebounds (which he'll get many chances to collect). As for defense he's getting opportunity and the results have been good (so far).

Whiteside had bad hands but he had potential to improve. He went to China, got reps and got better. His bad hands were different from Biyombo.

                          • Biyombo has Ben Wallace qualities, as long as you ignore steals, fouls, on/off, the ability to catch the ball and overall defence.

                            Steals
Biyombo gets 0.4 steals per 100 possessions, with a career best of 0.7 per 100.
Wallace averaged 2.3 per 100 for his career.

                            Fouls
Biyombo is averaging 6.9 fouls per 100 possessions with a career mark of 5.4.
Wallace has a career average of 3.4 per 100.

                            On/Off
Biyombo has never had a positive season and is currently -3.6 for this seasons per 100.
Wallace didn't post a negative season until he was 35 (and basically a shell of his former self). In his prime, he was a +11.8.

                            Turnovers
Biyombo has a TO% of 18.8% this year and career % of 17.1.
                            Wallace's career average is 13.8%.

                            Assists
Biyombo is a career avg of 0.8 Assists per 100.
                            Wallace career avg is 2.4.

                            WS48
                            Biyombo career is 0.076
                            Wallace is 0.140

Biyombo can rebound and block shots, like Wallace did. But every other aspect of basketball, Wallace was far superior. The comp is an insult to how good Wallace was. Biyombo is closer to Shawn Bradley than Wallace.
