This has to assume JV and his agent are not the brightest bulbs around. If either felt this was the case, why would they have signed the extension they did instead of rightfully telling the Raptor organization to go fuck themselves?
Just speculating here, but I think playing internationally with the Lithuanian national team that summer had something to do with it. Either way, they grossly misread the market, and I'm surprised Valanciunas hasn't sacked his agent by now. Masai lucked out.

Patrick is going to be a UFA.
For a compare Ryan Anderson got 20M and Chandler Parsons got 23.
Thats with the cap at 94. Next year its going up again. To 102.
      Pat makes 6.
Not likely he takes a pay cut.
More likely he makes north of 20.
No way north of 20. Unless Patterson has a breakout year, he is going to make around 14-15 a season.

I don't think he'll take a paycut. He shouldn't. But I fully expect the organization to try and convince him to take less to stay. They have his Bird Rights, but he's not going to be the hill that Masai dies on. Plus we don't know what the CBA will look like if the Owners push for a lockout.

The cap is going up but the available cap space will probably be lower.

And as valuable as Pat is, "starters" have more value than "bench players" on the market. Hence him not starting being a value suppression tactic. Or at least, value suppression being an effect of him not starting.

Or that JV was fine with being brought along slowly. Just because value suppression might be a benefit, or even a portion of the thinking involved, doesn't mean there aren't other valid reasons for limited minutes. Casey clearly didn't trust JV much out there.

Heck, judging by the deal JV signed, he wasn't chomping at the bit to be a primary option and placed his own value far below where some (including me) would place it.

I think to a man .. no one expected our back up centre to get 18M... but he did....

Any chance we trade our pick(s) for next years draft? Would that clear any significant cap space?
Rookie cap holds are pretty insignificant especially since the rookie scale hasn't been renegotiated to account for the new cap. So probably less than $3M combined for both picks.

Yes a lot of teams made drunken sailors proud this go around and may have tapped themselves out for next year...

                  But

There are going to be a few teams with gobs of space again next year to carry on the tradition. Philly / LA / Heat / Knicks / Nets come to mind right off the top....
Regardless the likelihood of lots of dead presidents coming PPats way is pretty good.

As of when? By the end of the playoffs it was pretty obvious.

This is different. No way Patterson gets overpaid. Most he's getting is 11M per. Realistically, only advanced-stat-using-Raptor-fans realize how valuable he is to the team.

Look in the offseason thread...lots of talk of biz getting 10 or 12 and some term...

                          18M$...
And anything these guys can get is good by me....

Disagree with both of you. Saying "no one" expected 18/yr may be a bit hyperbolic, but it wasn't "pretty obvious" either. The numbers I heard floated were 15-17.

                              • Plenty of broadcasters speculated that biz would get 18-20m during the playoffs. 15m was considered hometown discount. Some people here said 10-12m but it was wishful thinking, not reflective of market value.
Mozgov got 16m, no way Pat gets 11m. Anyone that thinks Pat can start will pay him 16m and it only takes a netsy team to offer more.
