The same reason any other team has worked a S&T when their star was interested in leaving but didn't want to give up any money. DD is young, he has many years to chase whatever. This is his big payday.
The S&T rules aren't the same as they used to be. No benefits anymore.

      • Did you guys lose a bet or something? Why are the Pacers on your avatar? Or has RR been hacked by a tech savvy Pacers fan?

The up-in-the-air issue about DeRozan is the reason we need to go all out and sign a max player right away, on day one. If it's not Horford then it has to be someone else. You pretty much to put all your eggs in one basket, a realistic one, and go for it. Like Aldridge but realistic. Yea, he was impressed by us but was he ever really going to come here, of course not. You need to really do your research and figure out a realistic scenario where Raptors are more attractive than anyone else, and know that your presentation will do the job. But basically, Masai has to have his max player squared away before the media comes a-calling about what to do with DeRozan so that we can avoid those discussions (and hurt feelings).

These guys (in the locker room) seem really close. Granted it's a business, but having DeRozan whipping around in the wind while the team spends a week searching for other solutions first won't sit well with everyone (although it would also give other teams a chance to swipe him away first and save us the trouble). OTOH if we got that superstar max player right away, well, winning is more fun and there's always Instagram and Twitter to keep in touch with your old pals.

Yes, we lost a bet. Tucas won a fantasy competition. And is the devil.

can either of you explain the difference please? there is no benefit anymore? i thought that the change only affected the conditions on where the player could be traded to, regarding available cap space.

Teams can now only sign and trade players if they sign them to a deal a team that doesn't have Bird Rights can sign them to - so their max offer, but only for 4 years and smaller raises. In other words, if the Lakers have cap room, they can offer him 4 years and just over 100M. And if we sign and trade DD to them (or anyone else), we can offer him 4 years and just over 100M.

wow. so completely useless now. no reason for a player to take the sign and trade and hurt his new team by having them give up assets.

so nba guaranteed 7 years when you are paying to develop a player and then nothing. that is shitty for non marquee living areas.

It is useful to trade him to an over the cap team and get something in return (vs letting him walk for nothing). It doesn't directly benefit the player anymore, though, and there's no need for a team with cap space to do it - unless they want to unload some contracts?

                    • Eg what if LA wanted to use their cap space on other players and s+t for DeMar?

They can, they just need to match salaries.

                          Luxury tax teams can't.

Cap space is determined by salary on the books. If they sign DeMar or sign and trade for DeMar, his salary sits on the books either way, so their cap space is reduced.

If you are talking about signing other guys and then sign and trading for DeMar, they then have to obey trade rules - specifically, they have to send out enough salary in the trade (about 20M) to match DeMar's incoming 25M.

Yep, they are looking to increase player movement and make the summers more interesting, make the product more of a 12 month news item than a 6 month news item.

                              • The simple fact that now so many posters are talking/asking about S&T options for DD is telling. Clearly most of us think that it is time to move on from DD. This thread will explode when MU resigns DD to a max contract and cripples our flexibility for the near future.
