I think Casey's struggles are that he's a defensive minded coach. He's good at coaching D, he's made a great career out of coaching D. He's not good at scripting plays and making adjustments on the offensive side of things. That's not to say he cannot be placed in a winning situation here in Toronto. If they want to continue on with Casey they really need to bring in an offensive coordinator who calls the offensive plays. That's a slight demotion for Casey but it's his ticket to success. They need to find an offensive guru, it can even be a young guy they can groom to be Casey's successor.
Except they've got Nick Nurse who is supposed to be an offensive guru and experienced, respected assistants like Greer and Kalamian. There's more than enough experience and knowledge on the bench. No head coach in the league is sitting there drawing up plays on the sidelines in timeouts - all of those plays are developed days, weeks and months beforehand by the coaching staff, etc.

The offense has issues but the biggest issue right now is that their two 'best' players are shitting the bed in a historically awful manner and that is hard to overcome, in particular, when one of those guys doesn't really do much other than score. No team in the playoffs - not even GSW or SA - are going to survive with their two best players shooting 7-28 on a nightly basis.

    • Man, oh man. I'm still speechless at that Derozan performance last night (and Casey for allowing that to happen). Holy crap that was bad. That was an assault to the senses and all things we love about basketball which probably turned off an entire new generation of potential basketball fans.

Somewhere in his basement Matt52/mcHappy is sipping a glass of wine with a big-ass smirk on his face. Slow clap. lol.

Not really. There's no way he's gonna turn down all that nationwide attention during FA frenzy.
If he continues to shit the bed on national TV, who knows. Bides his time until the second cap jump. I dunno, would make a great trade chip if he did.

Matt doesn't drink, which is impressive for being a fan of this team.

Yeah, cause that's why he's doing it. For the attention. To feed his ego.

Shit, I know he's played terrible and we all hate watching him play right now but that doesn't mean he's now some horrible human being who stole your grandma's purse and kicked your dog.

Blame Lowry partially on this one. If he doesn't foul out; DeRozan doesn't come back into the game and we also win it.

Yes, send his ass packing on draft night if he opts in.

Sure he did in analogy form. My Grandma's purse is the basketball and the dog is the flow of the game.

I think you're a little guilty of taking our words too seriously.

People like that kind of stuff though, and it usually only happens once in your career. You get flown out, wine and dined, entertained all on their buck and then they pitch a presentation to make you feel like you're the centre of the universe. Why wouldn't you want to experience that?

Also his agent would probably slap him if he took the player option over going to free-agency the first year after the cap goes through the roof.

The flip side to the argument is that some people felt the offense always was a bit ugly and could be slowed/shut down in the playoffs. All the arguments for increased player and ball movement weren't just so that it would look nice - that's been a winning playoff formula for several postseasons in a row.

It was predictable that there would be some offensive struggle, most fans hope it would be okay and likely nobody thought it would be this bad. Although after last year's Washington series we really should have been prepared for the potential of a worst-case-scenario.

The defence and the role players continue to be two huge positives. Plus JV.

                        2. Sure it works. Keep in mind, the cap is 92M. Chicago only has about 75M committed, even if there are opt outs and picks and cap holds that push that up to 83M (unlikely), they have enough cap room to absorb the extra 9M difference between DD's presumed max 26M salary and Butler's 17M salary.

On the other hand, no logical reason for Chicago to trade Butler for DeMar. Butler is clearly the better player, and the cheaper player.

Maybe they're tired of 3-point shooting and want to see if a team of Rose and DeRozan can make all those nerds second guess their analytics mumbo-jumbo

Yeah all these scenarios where they re-sign DeMar for the max then straight up trade him for a better player are not going to happen. I'm a bit concerned that they'd actually be able to upgrade by trading max-contract DeMar. Yes, some teams will want him, but will they lose a trade to get him at $25m/year? It's risky, especially after this postseason.

But we're not talking about 'offensive struggles'. These are historically bad performances in the history of the NBA. It's far beyond tactical adjustments or even strategic questions. No one else on the team is struggling like this either. Funny how Carroll and Ross and Joseph and JV and Biyombo and Patterson can all still play well....
