Context is important guys. We were never going to have cap space the next 3 years, so what we're paying Trent really doesn't matter. We got the deal done quickly and made Trent happy and ready to work. His contract seems perfectly fair value to me. All of you saying it's a bad deal are going to be eating serious crow when you see Trent play this season.

We are really betting on our player development system, which has proven in the past to be a good bet..... like Primer said. Those were mostly Casey times, though, so we shall see. That said, if the cap spikes again, then every contract signed recently will look like a bargain.

Even $1M would help here.

We've balked at many of our past contracts, bu the player has always came back to earn it. DeMar's second contract, JV's contract, Norm's contract... time and time again we've been proved wrong. I expect that with Gary Trent Jr.

I mean we are inches away from paying tax, and as such can't afford a 15th player on the roster. If someone got hurt and we need the added depth we'll have to probably spend a second round pick to trade a guy to get under that tax. It's not a great situation.

Need Dan to chime in as well because I don't think we're in any cap danger.

We would need 6 guys to get injured before we'd need a 15th player. The season would be a loss at that point no matter what.

But yeah Dan pointed it out before. We can only go 14 guys because of all the partial guarantees. Or we'd have to wait for a potential Dragic trade. If we can get less money back on a potential trade then that works too.

That's unusual to not even hear whispers, even for the player's agent to generate some leverage for his client. Feels like the Raps were bidding against ourselves. Paying top dollar to beg our own players to stay and hoping they will grow to earn their contracts seems to the unlucky part about being in this market.

According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, league sources believe Trent Jr. could command $18 to $20 million annually.
While a contract that rich might come as a bit of a surprise to some, NBA teams pay up for young talented shooters like Trent Jr. Players like Malik Beasley, Davis Bertans, and Kelly Oubre Jr. all recently received contracts worth $15 million annually.
