Its not about catching up now. I remember multiple interviews of Casey saying "playing this way will catch up to us. We need to play better D". Its just the team was just on such a high. I honestly cant remember a better period of time like that. You preach what you want but when your winning its hard to tell your players to do something else.
Yeah, they really were kicking ass, right? It was crazy ... almost hard to remember, given how it all crashed. But it was surreal, even at the time ...

That 'who' was JJ. Solid enough for you?
JJ played 20 mins a game. That sounds like pretty good minutes for a specialist.

Doug Collins once said on ESPN "if you want to get the most out of Lou Williams you have just let him do him." When you restrain him it takes away from his impact. That's why he wasn't as effective in Atlanta(before the injury). That offense restrained him.

Doug Collins coached Lou William in Philly.
Again, no problem. Let Lou "do his thing", and be equally inept as GV from the previous season. Just make sure JJ is on the court at the same time "doing Salmons thing" on D from the previous season, only a lot better. That should equal a net improvement in D, no?

Exactly. And JJ was arguably our best defender, so the Salmons excuse makes no sense on the defensive end.

A lot of people are pointing to the defensive system itself, as exposed in the Zach Lowe article and the BBall breakdown video (why the Raps got swept...). Do you think Casey would ever man up and admit that?

You see you can't do that. Cause JJ cant shoot. So he couldn't play more on offense than he already did. Salmons was a floor spacer. That's why I like this move to moving JJ to the 4. He not being able to shoot isn't that big of a deal.

Great time to be a raptor fan.

Raptors always thought that they could just flip the switch and become a good defensive team. That probably had a lot to do with the immaturity and inexperience in the locker room. I don't feel like Casey is running from any blame.

                  • In playoffs the raptor core realize that you have to built that defensive identity from training camp. I feel vets like Scola and Carroll will reinforce that message throughout the year. I'm sure Hayes would try to reinforce it last but, the thing about younger players they wont really listen to a guy that's not producing.

                    • I've started new thread where anyone can consolidate their ideas as to what has to happen on-court, this season, to be as successful as possible, if anyone's interested.

Neither can Demar, but he can score, so if you're going to go with non-floor spacers hurt our offense, then you've got to look at DD first. But, wrt JJ/Salmons, JJ is a vastly superior offensive player than Salmons. Not even in the same ballpark.

                        JJ: 114 ORTG / 17.4 USG / 17.9 PER
Salmons: 100 ORTG / 12.6 USG / 7.6 PER (last season with Raps)

Do you have any idea just how bad Salmons offensive numbers really are?

And JJ is even more dangerous if he's used as a cutter - which is another way to get defenders moving.

Damn, I can already hear the interview this season when our offense slips to bottom half of the league. It's because we lost Chuck Hayes. lol.

edit: I am 100% certain the "losing Amir" excuse will come on multiple occasions.

You cant take minutes away from a All-Star for a specialist. I've never heard that being done before. Also I think defenders respects DD shot more than JJ

                            • Oh my god with the "Salmons was a floor spacer" thing again. From Feb on he shot 32% from 3. In the playoffs he shot 17% from 3. Salmons was barely more serviceable from 3 than DD is, and Salmons could ONLY spread the floor on offence.

As for his defensive impact... He had a negative DRPM that year. His on-off court splits were disastrous in the playoffs. During the season the only guys with worse individual defensive ratings on the team were Vasquez, DJ Augustin and Austin Daye.
