  • Same key personnel, same coach and the offence ranked top 10 now 3 years in a row. Understandable why the offence wasn't revamped.

Will be interesting to see what happens when Casey is replaced next year.
If we knew half as much about coaching an NBA team as we think, we"d know twice as much as we do.

        • Alot of teams have had good offenses. Balancing offence and defense is the sign of success.

Don't know if this this has been posted yet, but it's another article (along with Zach Lowe's the other day) that points out that ball movement offences may not work well without the right personnel. The more I read these, the more it seems Casey, Nurse et al may not be the offensive idiots we make them out to be.

Read the SI article. Interesting. Went back but couldn't find any reference to the Zach Lowe article - do you remember the title?

                Here's the link:

                http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/14...ing-figure-are

And here's the quote I referenced:

At the start of the season, Hoiberg introduced chunks of a fast-paced, pass-happy motion offense. Several key players found the fit awkward and asked Hoiberg, who maintains an open-door policy, to put some Thibodeau-era sets back in, according to team sources. Opposing scouts have also noticed this.

"Fred put in a lot of ball movement, but we have a lot of guys who hold the ball a lot," Noah said
                .

                • the agreement that thibs, who has run players into the ground and plays the same offensive sets we do, near enough. while our gm drafts and stocks the team with casey players that are now being labelled thibs players is hilarious

One of the biggest changes is Thibs defense (ICE'ing PnR, C staying in the paint, etc...), brought over by Andy Greer. This was to replace the scrambling and other strategic issues with Casey's defense. That's pretty well documented.

And if youve noticed, we are starting to ICE side PnRs less and less as the year goes on (thinking no JV is the reason)

Thing is when DD sits, Raps have shown an ability to work the ball on offense.

Reality is it takes hard work and discipline to run a system based on ball movement. I think the easiest thing for Casey to do, as the defensive guru he is - lol, is play an ISO style of play since it does play to the strengths of his top 2 guards.

Thibs had basic sets and similar sets to what Casey runs but he also ran numerous plays that emphasized ball movement and making the extra pass. How many games did we watch the Bulls take full advantage of Casey's rotations making the extra pass to give, usually a big, wide open layup or dunk.

Most obvious counter example is the Lebron-Wade Miami Heat.

The first season LBJ-Wade started with the your-turn/my-turn ISO style that they both had become accustomed to. After the Mavs packed the paint and showed that even GOAT players couldn't win with a mostly ISO based system, the Heat adapted. Lebron and Wade incorporated more ball movement and Heat added shooters like Battier & Allen, plus energy guys like Birdman. Bosh even changed his game to become a stretch big, small-ball C.
