    Fred VanVleet Leaves Toronto

The writing, as they say, appears to be on the wall for the Toronto Raptors and Fred VanVleet.
After declining his player option, he can sign elsewhere, and for presumably more money.
Toronto is up against the luxury tax line, and Gary Trent Jr. picking up his option to stay put means re-signing VanVleet might put them over that line.
And this team just doesn't feel anywhere near close enough to contention to justify paying the tax.

    relax... it's just a prediction.

    It's more simple for me:
Casey is gone, his favourite Demar is gone,
Nick Nurse leaves, his favourite Fred will leave.
It's more than just personal relationship, it's about Coach's ways on how to play basketball. Ideas, philosophy.

It's not as simple as letting him walk. We don't have a replacement for him and I don't believe we get enough cap space back, if he walks, to sign anyone who is a competent fill-in. And you know Toronto's history of trying to sign desired free agents who weren't already part of the roster.

Gary opting in at $18M actually frees up a bit more $$ to throw at Fred in free agency I think.

It is backward thinking, actually more like ignorant archaic mentality that if the Raptors are trading VanVleet, there will be no one from the team would could assume the vacated point guard duties.

So many examples or developing teams who took a risk to promote the players behind the regular starter to assume the role as soon as that starter was Either traded or left via free agency. That team was better off than before.

            • Sources say that the Raptors realize it will likely require an annual salary of at least $30 million (and possibly higher) to secure VanVleet's return. The Rockets, provided they miss out on Harden, are said to be ready to go to such lengths to sign away one of the last on-court connections to Toronto's title-winning team from 2018-19.”

                • LOL all these rumours keep coming out that oh, my, it looks like Fred's salary demands will be about 30M a year, what a surprise! Except that's the number that has been floating around since last fall when he (effectively) turned down an extension slightly lower than 30M a year. Shocking turn of events.

Middle of the season maybe he'd have come cheaper but after his late season surge with Jak here there was no real reason to be super optimistic about avoiding that number.

                  • Rockets are prepared to offer him more than $30M. Lets see how much more.

                      Sign and Trade

                      or just let him walk

                      • Houston wants a competitive roster for their new coach and at the same time this new coach just don’t want a team that he has to grind and develop.

Play-in or 1st round playoff fodder would be good enough on his first year tenure

                        LOL

                        • Harden will likely stay.
It's simple for the Rockets, stay away from the headcase . lol

                          • Rockets could reportedly offer Fred a 2 year max contract which would be $40M a year.

Curious whether Fred takes the short term payday or a longer term bigger guarantee. He's at the age where the exact reason Houston wants to give him a 2 year deal and is willing to pay a premium to do so is the same reason he should be looking for as much term as possible - once he's into his 30s and looking to sign a new deal, the same big money probably won't be there. This is the time to cash in all his chips.

I don't have the hate that some people have towards him, so not saying it because I want him gone, but I think he should take as big a payday as he can.

He already had a successful career, especially as an undrafted player. Won a championship as a key contributor, became an All star, now he just needs a big contract.
