Javtokas is a defensive specialist. Gritty old guy, like their Chuck Hayes.
Advanced stats and my eye test tells me that JV is an average NBA defender, so I'm going to take twitter reactions to international play with a giant fucking grain of salt. JV is getting warmed up to destroy the NBA, it's good he's working the kinks out before the season starts.
If FIBA play translated directly to the NBA then we just signed the best PF in basketball. Scola is averaging 23.5 pts, 11.3 reb, 2.5 ast, while shooting 53% from the floor.
Wiggins has made a lot of mistakes at FIBA too, I wonder if Minnesota fans have a forum thread shitting all over him?
EDIT: Damn, I just realized JV has only played ONE game so far at Eurobasket, everyone surely needs to calm the fuck down. ONE game guys, singular, 28 minutes total......
How mad would you be if Jv was benched for chunk Hayes in the fourth? Man the excuses never stop. Jv is below average nba defender. If you are willing to show me advanced stats that contradict that, please do. He's good at keeping the oppenants fg% low at the rim! but he's an atrocious p&r defender, and has a low defemsive iq.
I don't know why your trying to overrate his defense, his offence is his specialty. And the advanced stats show THAT.
And scola might actually be the best pf in fiba right now. Other than an old dirk nowitsku, who's better? You know the guys like bosh Davis and griffin aren't in fiba right now right??.?
But did he get pulled in the 4th and is he still the worst defender of all time??????
I kid, I kid. Let's enjoy the fact that JV's team is undefeated and he is their best player.
No. But he had his share of defensive faults in the second game as well. The same mistakes he makes in NBA. Overall he did ok. He's a big star in Europe, every team puts a lot of effort to stop him and he still ends up scoring - that's his biggest strength. Casey benches him rightfully because of his D but at the same time he's been ignoring Jonas' offensive talents for three years. I think this is the reason why so many fans are eager to see him significantly improve on D.

Is it mostly his pick and roll defense that's a problem? How's his rim protection and post defense?

DRtg. The best advance stat for defense in my book. He was a 105 last year, which is average. Please do show me the advanced stats you have which say he is a bad defender.

I always liked his post defense and rim protection. When he's left down low he's solid. His defensive faults start when he has to go high to defend PnR. Hopefully Casey adjust his D like it was talked in the summer. And Jonas also left his guy on 3 pt line just like yesterday who made two 3s because of that. Later in the game Jonas adjusted and improved his D and his game overall. But, yeah, that's very unusual for NBA games and at the same time it is a common thing in Europe for, well, a long time actually (Sabonis used to score from 3pt line all the time). But these 3pt shooting centers usually are too weak and too soft to defend against a guy like Jonas and they don't have skills to score at the low post.
Once again, the more I watch him play, the more I get a feeling that he's quicker, lighter on his feet and I like that.
Game 1... 19 Pts + 11 Boards... 5 of 5 from the line and a plus 2 in a close game.
Game 2....15 Pts +7 Boards.... 1 of 2 from the line and a plus 11 in a not so close game.
Game 3....25 Pts +12 Boards.... 3 of 3 from the line and a minus 6 in a not so close game.
Team won two of three.... He has logged 28 minutes in the close game when they needed him and just 22 in the blowout where they likely didn't need him and 30 minutes in the loss...
Lines look great.. anyone get to watch the games live to apply the eyeball analysis..?

among all nba centers starting at least 40 games JV was tied for 20th defensive rating...with Brooke, Asik, mozgov and only 1 point behind r.lopez and adams and only 2 points behind Chandler.....all while being used in a role terribly suited to him on the defensive side of the ball.
his defensive win shares rank him at 14th. notables below him....Dwight Howard, Asik and Robin Lopez.
So what are these advanced stats that show him to be a below average defensive NBA center?
among all starting centers who played in at least 40 games, JV netted a fg% differential on .8%...meaning that he held his opponent to .8% points lower that their average fg%, that was good enough for 10th.
at less than 6feet his defense there ranks him 15th in differential%, .1 point ahead of Marc Gasol
at less than 10 feet his differential% ranks him at 12th, tied with al horford and ahead of Drummond
where he needs to improve is his defense from 15 feet out, where he ranks 17th in differential %( wlthough here he ranks better than NErlens Noel and Tyson CHandler)

Good to know. Because to me from the eye test he doesn't look that good at all. His pick and roll defense just looks awful normally to me. But a big part is how Casey uses him and how our defense is structured. Where does Bismack rank? Or is he not included in any of these?
I relish negativity and disappointment. It is not healthy. Somebody buy me a pony.

Is there anyway to know how Jonas and Bismack do in pick and roll defense? or is there no stat for that?
I think Biyombo ranks considerably higher. Everyone knows that the pick and roll has been an issue for JV; I seem to remember reading that BB was ranked as one of the better hedgers in the league.
