Kawhi did say that and we traded for him anyways, which proves we can trade for a superstar even if they don't want to come here. We just had to accept that he would be here for 1 year then dip to LA. We could easily do that again and trade for another superstar. The players don't decide or Dame would be in Miami.
Technically, of course players have no contractual choice. But in reality, it does depends on how many years they have on their contract. Dame had a lot contract term left, so he was definitely going to immediately ask for another trade request from Raptors. Kawhi relented because he was only 1 year away from UFA and wisely decided to use that year to boost his FA market value... and boy did he ever.

    • It's a bit revisionist to say that Masai was ok with Kawhi staying for one year. Noone was talking championship or bust. It was year long pitch for Kawhi to stay and even getting championship didn't sway him. Probably made it easier actually.

So did you not read any of the other posts?

Quite literally just said all the players can do is try and influence their preferred destination to make a massive trade offer so the trading team gets max value. OKC got a franchise altering haul for PG, so they won.

Miami wouldn't pony up a great offer for Dame so they didn't get Dame despite Dame begging to go there.

If the Raptors make the strongest offer for a star player they will get them because the players always get sent to whoever makes the strongest offer. Which is exactly how we got Kawhi.

The hard rule is players get traded to whichever team makes the strongest offer.
How is it you could live though a half-ish season of Pascal telling everyone publicly as well as through his agent to NBA circles that he won't sign with anyone and think that all players can do is try and influence their preferred destination to make a massive offer? Was the package we received from Indy a massive offer? When you have players saying they won't play for this team or that then obviously their influence goes beyond the team they want to play for.

Harden wanted to go to Brooklyn and then to Philly and got his wish on both occasions. AD wanted LA, KD wanted the Suns. You're telling me that was because no other teams wanted to make a better offer or is it more like other teams knew these players wouldn't be happy playing for them and would leave the first chance they had?

There's no hard rule if only one team is making an offer.

        • 3 of ESPN's top 25 are still playing, so they have updates today:

Risacher is breaking out of his recent slump -- recording point totals of 14, 14, 18 and 11 in his last four games, while making half his field goal attempts. That's notable since every game he plays is heavily attended by NBA executives since the college season ended. Risacher's combination of size at 6-foot-10, and perimeter shooting ability -- he's hitting 39% of his 3-pointers -- is attractive considering the other things he brings with his defensive versatility and feel for the game. The French playoffs take place over the next two weeks and will be a key evaluation opportunity for lottery teams to get a last look at him with Bourg.

After a nearly five-month absence, Topic is back on the court following his knee injury, helping Red Star advance in the Adriatic League playoffs while posting eight points in 16 minutes in a win last week. Topic made a pair of 3s and showed his vision with intelligent pick-and-roll reads, but his rhythm looked off -- as is expected following his prolonged absence. He got his shot blocked on a few occasions and struggled to move laterally out of a stance as well. His coming games will be closely scrutinized, but he'll likely have plenty of games coming this month that give him a chance to regain some of the momentum he lost due to his injury.

Salaun's role -- already significant for an 18-year-old at this level of European basketball -- continues to grow as the season moves on with him logging 29 minutes per game over the past 10 contests. He has had several big scoring outings despite his inconsistent efficiency, showing off his credentials as an oversized forward with real shot-making prowess who plays with outstanding intensity on both ends of the floor. Cholet, currently on a five-game losing stream, will need to win its final two games to get in position to make the playoffs.
If we knew half as much about coaching an NBA team as we think, we"d know twice as much as we do.

Getting Kawhi wasn't luck at all, we made the strongest offer so we got him.

If we wanted Dame bad enough he would be a Raptor right now.

            Which is my entire point.

If we make the strongest offer we get the player every time. The only constant in all of these trades is the team that made the strongest offer got the player.
It was luck that he was available in the first place.
It was luck that he was able enough to play.
It was luck that he played at all.

"I don't think anybody knew how it was gonna work," Nurse said. "I think he hadn't played in like 12 or 14 months. So I don't think anybody knew health-wise where he was going to be." -Nick Nurse on Kawhi

Imagine trading for someone with that kind of info.

Kawhi didn't relent anything. He showed up and played his best and anyone else we trade for would do the same. I have zero worries about trading for any superstar. If they're available and we can offer the best package we get them.

Pascal was full of shit though and is gonna resign in Indiana. We got the best package possible for a barely all star wanting a max deal with 1 year left on his deal. Raptor fans just had insane expectations for what Pascal could bring back. We got his real value. And all of his posturing amounted to nothing, he still got traded.

Harden got LA to pony up to get him. No one else wanted him. They got max value. The player always goes where max value is offered.

KD got the Suns to give max value. No one offered a better deal than them. Had we done so KD would be a Raptor.

Whoever offers the best deal gets the player every time. The only thing they can do is encourage their preferred destination to make the best offer. It worked for KD, didn't work for Dame because Miami didn't want him that bad.

                  None of that is luck.

He was available and we made the trade. We got to give up a lot less due to the question marks around his health. Our staff examined his medicals and said they looked good enough make the trade.

Superstars come available every year and we can get any of them we want via trade, all we need is the best offer. Pretty simple.

Same reason we didn't give up OG and Scottie for KD. Simple really ...

Whoa, totally forgot we also got a future first from the Pacers. They'll probably still be a playoff/playin team in two years but still a great range to make some proverbial hay with.
it will be a solid year honestly because of the boozer twins you likely will have enough to trade into the top 10 if you aren't already there.

Almost the entire league engages in trades every year. Star players get moved every year. When a star player becomes available that we see as a fit, we can trade for them, just need to make the best offer.

the kawhi trade was the right move otherwise we would still be in the demar era
