They had Lowry & Derozan to carry all the scoring, literally. They drafted Jakob as a mobile center to backup and potentially replace JV, who Casey really never liked. The roster need now is scoring.... that’s not the same as drafting for positional need. It’s drafting for talent/skill.Only one thing matters: We The Champs.

They drafted Poeltl because he had the lowest chance of being a bust.

You don’t know the exact thought process or reasoning. They might have drafted because he had a really high PER. Even if that’s true, it made perfect sense at the time. We were in win-now mode, thinking Lowry and DD could get us over the top and adding some young players who wouldn’t be long term projects. At the time, my thoughts were that they were looking for an eventual JV replacement.... Chris1anL was all over that premise. And I felt like they drafted Pascal as Biz-type low skill energy big replacement, with both guys being ready to contribute quickly. That ended up being true. The needs now are different. We are retooling and Masai has publicly acknowledged freeing up development minutes for you players. It’s not the same and I trust them to realize that.
Shit you can say they will draft Mitchell because that's their MO too. Older college player, undersized guard. Kinda like FVV, Malachi.
There are things we want them to do I get it. But what they are likely to do can be completely different.Last edited by MixxAOR; Mon Jun 7, 2021, 11:16 PM.Only one thing matters: We The Champs.

Doesn't Barnes sound like Raptors MO? Defense first player with shot mechanics that they believe can be tweaked. That's pretty much why they drafted OG.

^^ This x 100. We saw Draymond without Steph last year and that got the Warriors a top 2 pick, if that’s the angle. Lol.

not quite ... defensively he is literally insane and his offensive skill is actually playmaking BUT, yes.... I agree I wouldn't want him on THIS team.
Roster construction needs to account for what the league wants. If I'm not mistaken, the Raptors led the league in PF per 100 possessions, so if the concept is to prioritize a defensive-first mentality, we need to be aware that the league is going to be heavily biased against that... intentionally by design.
Adam Silver: NBA Rule Changes Having Intended Effect of Increasing Scoring
TIMOTHY RAPP
NOVEMBER 1, 2018
The NBA's new rule changes this season, which were implemented to cut down on the amount of contact defensive players can make, have led to a major influx of scoring.
But NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the new rules are being enforced as planned.
"We had a call with our competition committee last week, which is made up of coaches, GMs, owners, players, officials to discuss just that," he said during a press conference Thursday evening, per ESPN.com. "And the consensus, or the strong feeling from the group was that the rule changes were happening as we intended."
Silver added that one of the aspects of the rule changes being closely monitored was consistency.
"The question that seems to be coming back from some of the coaches and players is in essence is how much physicality will be allowed on defense," he said. "Everybody's feeling their way through this a little bit. What we're hearing is the teams will adjust to wherever we end up, they just want to make sure there is consistency across the league."
Those changes haven't been popular across the board.
"Defense isn't really an emphasis anymore in this league," Draymond Green told reporters on Oct. 21, per Nick Friedell of ESPN.com. "So I think you're seeing it all around the league with these high scores. We know what the emphasis is."
LeBron James, at the very least, believes playing defense has simply become more difficult.
"It's challenging, that's for sure," he said, per Justin Verrier of The Ringer. "You've got so many powerful offensive teams that you're not going to have many possessions that you can be behind because most teams in our league are going to make you pay."
Coming into Thursday night, NBA teams were averaging 112.3 points per game, which would be the highest average for a season since the 1970-71 season, per ESPN.com.
Of course, the NBA in general is trending toward a more offensive game, with teams adapting the strategy of spacing the floor and shooting a flurry of threes, popularized by the Golden State Warriors. Teams also play at a faster pace, taking shots early in the shot clock and pushing the rock in transition.
Add in the increased pace and spacing with the rule changes, and it's hardly surprising the league is trending toward a more offensively charged game.

Yeah, but all of that "insane defense" doesn't have the impact it used to because of the rule changes. Even Draymond knew what was coming. He called out the new rule changes, 3 years ago. You basically can't even breathe on an offensive player anymore.... and a guy like Trae Young is fully exploiting that.

In general you see teams that yes have offensive power but have defensive foundations. The warriors were REALLY good on defence... Ah I found it:

More importantly, you need to be top 5 in either or to be successful and the teams that won were typically and historically great at both.
04 pistons being an EXTREME example of having trash offense. I am not saying we win being the pistons. I believe we need playmaking without question. I just don't necessarily think playmaking and scoring should come at the risk of having a bad defence. ESPECIALLY since our defensive scheme is super aggressive and requires everyone to be in sync. It likely needs to change and become a bit more conservative of a scheme either way but still you get the point.
It's why Mobley, Cade, and Suggs are intriguing. It's why Green is piquing my interest now, (offensive ability).
My point is we shouldn't be trading a player in this draft to try to contend in the next 2 years. We should be thinking years 3-5 with this core if we are serious. The nets are not going to lose and getting a player like Lavine (who is not curry I am sorry but NO. He is not Dame, who won't be traded out of Portland, and is not Luka, or Harden level, which means we need to find other ways to compete and remain competitive.
We are a two-way team that lost our depth. So that is part of the issue in recent years. (last year and this year). Both in the playoffs and regular season. We have lacked the ability to produce anything off the bench. Specifically in terms of scoring. THAT is the real issue. Having this draft pick gives us that depth. You need depth for two things. Development, regular season seeding, and because you need more than 4 guys you can trust in the playoffs. You need a GOOD top 7-8.
I am uninterested in trading for anyone who isn't Harden, Luka, etc level, especially if its trading away big chunks of our future. That is again why I suggested trading if we don't get mobley I don't mind a trade involving some draft assets not in the first round of this year, and Boucher for Turner.

There are two teams the Raps would have a hard time outscoring if both sides were healthy, and those are GS and BKN. It doesn't matter who we draft that is not going to change.
We need a guy that can score against the best defenders and that hasn't changed, but there isn't some massive change happening which requires the Raps to stop emphasizing a strong defense. Clippers, Jazz, Nuggets, and 76ers are all still strong defensive teams and will have to be really strong on that end to have any hope of slowing down BKN or GS if they ever get healthy.
